The Bazaar and Market

Seeing a bazaar in a dream signifies the means by which people earn their livelihood and the division of labor to which people are obliged to conform in order to continue their lives. A spacious and crowded bazaar signifies abundance, while a narrow and old bazaar signifies the high cost of living. The bazaar sometimes signifies heedlessness, immersion in the world, war, and struggle. For things sold or purchased in the bazaar, refer to the relevant entry of the dream-book.

Seeing a bazaar in a dream signifies increase. Whoever sees in his dream that he is walking about in a bazaar is devising a new undertaking; whoever sees that he is buying something from the bazaar shall have his sustenance become plentiful; and whoever sees that he is looking at the things being sold before a shop in the bazaar shall have a hope he has cherished become reality. Since the bazaar is generally also interpreted as a place of worship, shopping in the bazaar is, according to some, interpreted as worship as well.

Along with the abundance of the goods he has bought, it is a sign that the worship he has performed has also been accepted by the Almighty God (Glorious and Exalted is He). The bazaar and market are interpreted as gain. If you see in your dream that you are shopping in a market, or that you are walking around the market and calculating the things you will buy, it signifies that your income and expenditure—that is, your budget—are not balanced, and that although you need many things, you cannot buy them because your money is scarce.

Seeing the bazaar in a dream filled with people and containing everything one might seek signifies selling the goods at hand and great profit.

If a person sees in a dream that he has brought something to the bazaar and wishes to sell it but is unable to sell it, it signifies goodness and baseness.

If a person sees in a dream that he has stolen something while shopping, then, if the dreamer is a warrior, it signifies that he will act treacherously and steal something from the spoils of war.

If a person sees in a dream that the people of the bazaar are asleep, or that the shops and inns have been closed, or that spiders have made nests upon the goods displayed for sale in the shops, it signifies that trade in that bazaar will cease.

Seeing oneself in a dream raising one’s voice in the bazaar and market while remembering Almighty God (Glorious and Exalted is He) signifies commanding what is right and forbidding what is wrong.

Seeing in a dream that there are no people in the bazaars and streets, or that the people of the bazaar have died, signifies the cessation of trade, the occurrence of oppression, or the destruction and perishing of goods through the arrival of calamity and affliction, and consequently the dearness of goods.

If a person sees in a dream that he has come to the bazaar, that everywhere is empty, and that nothing is being sold, it signifies deficiency and incompleteness in worship and slackness in religious commands.

If a person sees in his dream that he has lost one of his possessions in a bazaar he does not know, or that he has gained some benefit there, or suffered some loss, then, if the dreamer is engaged in jihad and war while awake, it signifies that he will flee from the battle and be deprived of attaining the rank of martyrdom; if he has gone on pilgrimage, it signifies that he will not complete his pilgrimage fully; if he is a student, it signifies that he will abandon his studies, or that he is acquiring knowledge for a purpose other than the pleasure of Allah (Glorious and Exalted is He). If none of these conditions applies to him, it signifies that he will abandon the Friday prayer.

Therefore, if a person sees a spacious bazaar and market in his dream, his circumstances will become spacious and his worldly possessions will be abundant. Some interpreters said that, because sorrows and griefs gather within it, the bazaar is interpreted as anguish, grief, torment, disputation, and things such as incitement toward evil. However, for one whose livelihood is always gained through buying and selling in the bazaar and market, seeing a multitude of people there and seeing them engaged in their occupations is interpreted as good.

Sometimes the bazaar is also interpreted as a person’s book, sermon, reading, rank, playing, or error in his preaching and reading. Every bazaar and market has an interpretation peculiar to itself.
