Bekri Mustafa
Bekri Mustafa was a well-known popular character who lived in Istanbul in the seventeenth century, was famous for his fondness for drink and his quick wit, and was the subject of many anecdotes. In the time of Murad IV, an age in which drinking was prohibited and those who disobeyed the prohibition were severely punished, Bekri Mustafa continually defied this ban and came into trouble with the janissaries and the judges.
Besides appearing in anecdotes, he also became one of the characters in the Karagöz shadow plays. Osman Cemal Kaygılı also published a novel entitled “Bekri Mustafa.”
