According to another narration: To see a cistern in a dream signifies a wife, because water is placed in it; and sometimes it signifies things such as a wallet, treasure, chest, or pit, in which wealth is placed and kept. A cistern signifies everyone who knows one’s secrets, such as a friend or a child. To see olive oil in a water cistern signifies the wealth of the owner of the cistern, while to see water in an olive-oil cistern indicates that olive oil will become scarce.

To see the cistern of a mosque in a dream signifies the imam of the mosque; and the cisterns of inns and dervish lodges signify their trustees and caretakers. Whoever sees in a dream that there is a cistern in an unsuitable place in his house will have a jinn afflict his family or one of his friends in some place.

Whoever sees in a dream that there is oil, honey, or milk in a cistern, it signifies that his wife is pregnant and that beneficial things will increase. If an oil cistern is filled with water in a dream, it signifies that the matters mentioned above will become stagnant. If someone sees in a dream that a water cistern is filled with oil, it signifies abundance. The cistern of a dervish lodge, khanqah, or mosque represents in a dream its imam, its spiritual teacher, or the caretaker and guardian of the property. If someone sees in a dream that the water cistern of the house is situated in an unsuitable place in the house, it represents a jinn spirit that follows such a person or may afflict his house.

To see in a dream that a well in one’s house is being used as a cistern indicates that the residents of that house are of the middle class, or that the water of that house is salty or undrinkable. To see in a dream that the cistern is filled with butter, honey, or milk signifies that one’s spouse is pregnant or that there will be abundance for that family. If the family of such a house is thirsty in the dream and the cistern is filled with something other than water, it may indicate that they owe zakat and must pay the due charity of their wealth, or that such a family has turned its back on the path of Allah and preferred worldly gains, or that they possess knowledge which they do not practice. It may also indicate scarcity of rain in that region and the necessity of spending money in the way of Allah.

A cistern in a dream also represents a protective shield or a pocket, a person’s honor, blessings, attainment of a respected rank, or the removal of difficulties. However, this interpretation applies only to those who use a cistern or a similar vessel for water or a water fountain, and in their case it may also signify safety from fears and protection.

It can be read as a sign of easing, receiving support, gaining morale, or a fruitful development.
