Eating Food

Eating food alone in a dream is a sign of sorrow. Eating in a gathering indicates that one will obtain gain and shows how one will share this gain with other people.

According to the interpretation upon which all interpreters agree, eating food that is well-cooked, easy to eat, sweet, and delicious is a sign of goodness and benefit, sustenance and property, and happiness.

Eating bitter and peppery food in a dream is interpreted as grief and sorrow; eating sour food is interpreted as illness and distress. Rotten and spoiled food denotes what is unlawful. Whoever sees that he has put a morsel of good and sweet food into his mouth will hear a word that brings joy. A morsel of tasteless and unpalatable food is a sign that he will hear an evil word.

Whoever sees in a dream that someone has given him food will come into the possession of much property. If the one giving the food is a good person, it is lawful; if he is an evil person, it is unlawful. Whoever sees that he has put a very hot morsel into his mouth and swallowed it will encounter a calamity.

Seeing in a dream that one’s morsel remains stuck in one’s throat is a sign of affliction, sorrow, the deterioration of one’s affairs, and difficulty in livelihood. Seeing that one swallows the morsel with ease denotes goodness and benefit, property and sustenance. Very hot food is a sign of narrowness in sustenance and difficulty in livelihood; delicious food denotes a good livelihood; and a hair coming out from within the food is a sign of sorrow.

Whoever sees in a dream that he licks his fingers after eating will receive very little good. Whoever sees that he drinks food as though it were water will have abundant sustenance and livelihood. Whoever sees that he has filled his mouth with much food will have his affairs become confused. Whoever sees that he has eaten a fatless and tasteless food will fall into such straitness that he will desire death. Whoever tastes a food and finds it delicious will attain joy. Whoever tastes a food and detests it will die. Whoever sees, while eating from a dish or tray, that the food has come to an end, his life has come to an end.

Whoever sees in a dream that he has emptied his food vessel and licked it with his tongue or finger has had his sustenance cut off from that place. Or his appointed time has arrived.

According to Kirmani: Whoever sees in his dream that he is eating from a banquet table will attain goodness and sustenance. Whoever sees that food is being eaten from a laid table, if he is unmarried, will marry. Whoever sees that the food before him on the table has suddenly changed will become poor. Setting a banquet table is a sign of a long life; gathering up the table is a sign that his death is near.

According to another narration: Whoever sees in a dream that he is eating from a vessel will become content. However, if the vessel from which he eats is made of something unlawful, such as gold or silver, this dream is a sign of unlawful property and much debt. Eating among people is fame. Seeing that one chews the thing one is to eat means to belittle one’s earnings and work by not esteeming them. Seeing that one swallows what one has chewed means that one’s debt will be demanded without delay.

Seeing in a dream that the taste of the thing one has eaten has changed to a taste better than its own is a sign that the dreamer’s inner self is pure; its changing to bitterness and sourness is a sign that a change will occur in his work and in his family.

Whoever sees that he eats with his right hand follows the Sunnah. Eating with the left hand is obedience to the enemy and affliction upon the friend.

Whoever sees in a dream that he eats food with another person’s hand will be provided with sustenance through trust and reliance upon Allah, as an honourable and contented person. At times, it also means that the dreamer will become ill and be unable to eat by himself. Seeing that one eats food of an evil colour is a sign that the worth of the dreamer will decline. Seeing that one eats a white mushroom is a sign of adhering to command and prohibition, acting with moderation without haste in one’s work, longevity, and— for the sick—healing and illness.

Eating squash in a dream is evidence of following the Prophetic Sunnah, guidance, and intelligence. Seeing that one is invited to the morning meal is interpreted as a distant journey; being invited to the midday meal as deliverance from troubles and attainment of comfort; and being invited to the evening meal as someone wishing to deceive him, while he, without being deceived by that person, deceives the one contemplating the deception.

Whoever sees in a dream that he has eaten and digested the food will become covetous in his work and craft and will be compelled to labour greatly. Whoever sees that he eats human flesh raw will backbite the person whose flesh he has eaten, or that person’s relatives.

It provides early awareness; the person sees risks before they grow and can choose a more solid path.

Neglect, haste, untrustworthy people or uncontrolled behavior can increase the difficulty.
