To see oneself fasting in a dream signifies making a good vow, success attained through patience, the continuance of divine mercy by persevering in prayer, progress materially and spiritually, giving the expiation for an oath, performing the pilgrimage, and, for one who desires a child, having a male child.
To see oneself breaking one’s fast in a dream signifies joy and relief; breaking the fast during the daytime signifies setting out on a journey. To break the fast signifies backbiting one’s brother in religion; to break the fast forgetfully signifies a good provision.
To see in a dream that one is in the month of Ramadan and fasting signifies that something about which one was doubtful shall become clear, memorizing the Qur’an, joy and goodness, honor and esteem, and deliverance from illness, debt, and sorrow.
To see oneself intentionally breaking the Ramadan fast signifies intentionally killing a man; to see oneself breaking the Ramadan fast and taking the evening meal signifies journeying with the intention of worship and a beautiful Islamic nature.
To fast a compensatory fast in a dream signifies paying one’s debt, deliverance from captivity and distress, and repentance from sins. To see oneself fasting on the days of the Feast signifies committing an ugly and blameworthy deed, and falling into the folly of grieving on a day and in a place meant for rejoicing. To fast on the doubtful day called the Day of Doubt signifies committing sin; to fast every kind of Sunnah and supererogatory fast signifies abundant good and benevolence.
For a person to see himself fasting in a dream signifies fulfilling his vow and fasting. To see a fasting person breaking his fast signifies that person’s being in a very good state or setting out on a journey to somewhere; to see oneself breaking one’s fast forgetfully signifies that he shall possess a good and wholesome provision; to see oneself fasting signifies that the person shall attain repentance.
It signifies that the person shall make a sacrifice and receive its result manyfold.
To see a fasting person breaking his fast in a dream signifies that the dreamer shall fall ill or set out on a journey. Some interpreters said: Whoever sees in a dream that he has broken his fast shall backbite one of the Muslims.
Whoever sees in a dream that he has broken his fast forgetfully shall be provided with a good provision. Whoever sees in a dream that he is fasting shall advance and repent of his sins. He shall also give expiation on account of an oath he has sworn, or he shall perform the pilgrimage. Some have said that whoever sees himself fasting shall have a male child.
Whoever sees in a dream that he is fasting in the month of Ramadan shall have a matter about which he is doubtful become clear. If he is ignorant, he shall learn the Qur’an. His rank and honor shall become exalted, and he shall attain joy and goodness. If a person sees in a dream that he is fasting in the month of Ramadan, alone or together with the people, it signifies that he is a believing, righteous, and devout person. If that person is troubled and sorrowful, Allah (Exalted is He) shall deliver him from his trouble and sorrow. If he is ill, Allah (Exalted is He) shall grant him healing. If he is in error, he shall attain guidance; and if he is in debt, he shall pay his debt.
Whoever sees in a dream that he intentionally breaks his fast in Ramadan shall intentionally kill a man. Likewise, whoever sees in a dream that he has intentionally killed a man, it signifies that he shall intentionally break his fast in Ramadan. Whoever sees that he fasts for two months on account of expiation or because of making up the month of Ramadan shall fall ill and repent of his sins. Whoever sees in a dream that he does not fast in Ramadan intentionally and while denying that fasting is obligatory injures one of the obligations of Islam. For whoever sees in a dream that he eats while he has acknowledged the obligation of fasting in Ramadan and intends to make it up, it signifies that he shall swiftly attain a provision from a place that does not occur to him.
If a person sees in a dream that he is taking the evening meal in Ramadan, it signifies that he is upon the primordial nature of Islam. At times, it also signifies that he shall travel for the purpose of worshipping Allah. To see oneself fasting in a dream without knowing which fast one is observing signifies protection from enemies and guarding oneself against harm and affliction. At times, fasting signifies the death of an ill person; at times, silence; at times, comfort and joy; and at times, sincerity for Allah in one’s words and deeds.
Whoever sees himself fasting in a dream, if he is ill, it signifies that he shall recover. Whoever sees himself eating during a time in which fasting is observed, it signifies that he has committed a forbidden deed, or that he is in debt, or that he shall fall ill. At times, this dream signifies provision that shall emerge from a place that does not occur to the person’s mind.
To fast the Ramadan fast in a dream signifies security from fear. If a person afflicted with epilepsy sees in a dream that he is fasting in Ramadan, it signifies that he shall recover his health, since the devils are chained in Ramadan. At times, this dream signifies paying a debt and the repentance of a sinful person.
To fast six days in the month of Shawwal in a dream signifies completing one’s deficiencies in prayer, or giving zakat, or repenting with remorse for one’s shortcomings.
To fast on Monday and Thursday in a dream signifies visiting one’s relatives, making oneself beloved to them by treating them in a manner that pleases them, and coming together in marriage with one of one’s relatives whom it is lawful for one to marry.
To be fasting on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days of every month in a dream signifies paying a debt in installments and learning the Qur’an or knowledge. To be fasting on the tenth day of Muharram in a dream signifies piety and going on pilgrimage. To be fasting on the Day of Arafah signifies receiving charity. To be fasting on the tenth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah signifies departing to the Hereafter at the last breath with the profession of faith. At times, this dream signifies fulfilling something one desires.
To be fasting on the Day of Ashura in a dream signifies engaging in good works, encountering sedition, affliction, and distress and then being delivered from them, and reaching the seasons and feasts. If the dreamer’s wife is pregnant, it signifies that she shall give birth to a righteous child and be provided with lawful wealth.
To fast in the month of Rajab in a dream signifies serving people of high rank; at times, it also signifies gaining profit from the sea or from a sea journey. To fast in the month of Sha‘ban in a dream signifies being present in a place of trade and obtaining profit.
To be fasting during the days of the “Day of Doubt” in a dream signifies committing sins and acts of disobedience. To fast a compensatory fast in a dream signifies deliverance from captivity, the repentance of a sinner, and paying a debt.
To fast a vowed fast in a dream signifies the ending of needs and the arrival of comfort and joy. To fast throughout the year in a dream signifies making a habit of undertaking something exceedingly difficult and committing manifest innovations; at times, this dream signifies preferring silence and speaking only words that are good.
To commit an act that breaks the fast in a dream signifies breaking one’s covenant, failing to keep one’s word, preferring love of this world to love of the Hereafter, and committing an act that necessitates expiation for an oath or other matters.
To take the evening meal while fasting in a dream signifies the healing of the sick and the successive appearance of relief and joys. If one who observes an annual fast sees himself breaking his fast, he backbites someone or commits a major sin. Or he shall be afflicted with a severe illness or suffer a calamity.
To see oneself fasting in a dream signifies living in comfort and abundance, being healthy, and being delivered from debt.
Ibn Sirin: To see oneself fasting in a dream signifies repentance, purification from sins, and the facilitation of difficult affairs. To see oneself observing the Ramadan fast signifies keeping away from doubtful earnings and paying one’s debt. Fasting for a long period signifies piety and asceticism.
