Graying of the Hair

In a dream, the graying of the hair is an auspicious sign for the young. Some interpreters have said that it signifies longevity, while others have said that it signifies weakness. If the whiteness is throughout the beard and head, it signifies poverty. If a person sees that part of his hair has turned gray, it signifies that his life and dignity are in a very good state; and if the wife of the one whose head has grown gray is pregnant, it signifies that she will bear a male child.

If a person sees in a dream that he is plucking the white hairs from his beard or cutting them, that man honors the aged. If a woman sees in a dream that her hair has grown gray, her husband is an evil-doer, a sinner. Some interpreters have said that the graying of the head signifies the arrival of a missing person or a guest. If one sees that the hair of his body has grown gray, then, if he is wealthy, it signifies that his wealth will depart; and if he is poor, it signifies a debt difficult to repay.

The graying of the hair of an unknown woman in a dream signifies the drying of grain; and the graying of the hair of an entire army signifies weakness and flight. As for the graying of the hair on the head of a sick person, it signifies death and the shroud. For one who is afraid, the graying of the hair signifies deliverance from a judge, a king, or the ruler of the state. Some interpreters have said that seeing a woman’s hair turn gray signifies that she will hear ugly words from her husband or her husband’s relatives, and at times it signifies divorce. For men do not regard the graying of a woman’s hair as pleasing.

If a person whose hair is already white sees in a dream that his hair has grown even whiter, yet that there are also black hairs among it, this signifies maturity. Whoever sees that his hair has become completely white will encounter something unpleasant from his superior or elder.

If a person sees in a dream that the hair on his chest is white, his food will become odorous. If a person sees in a dream that his beard is white and clear, he will attain honor, rank, and renown. His Eminence Ibn Sirin (May Allah have mercy upon him) did not regard it as good for one whose hair had not yet grayed to see his hair turn gray in a dream. He used to say, “The graying of the hair is the diminution of wealth.”

Whoever sees in a dream that he is plucking the gray hairs from his hair will oppose authority and will not show respect to the aged.
