Reed

To see a reed in a dream signifies a faithless, unbelieving, miserly, and despicable person. Leaning upon a reed signifies a short life, precarious friendships, and poverty; a reed from which a pen is made signifies fame, the silencing of weapons, the fine arts, and literary works.

It indicates that the dreamer may, at a moment he never expects, fall into a difficult and humiliating situation before his relatives. It is interpreted as slyness, trickery, and being deceived.

Whoever sees in his dream that he has many reeds beside him will obtain something with difficulty. Whoever sees that he is in a reed bed will associate with coarse and unbeneficial people. Whoever sees that he has a reed in his hand and leans upon it has but little of his life remaining. He will die in poverty. Things made of reeds are interpreted as servants.

Buying bobbins made of reed in a dream signifies property and benefit. A basket made of reed signifies a servant. According to Salimi, the reed is interpreted as wicked people. To see oneself standing while leaning upon a reed in one’s hand signifies that very little of one’s life remains and that one will die poor.

To see reeds from which pens are made signifies being involved in a lawsuit with someone and being a person fond of display. According to some interpreters, seeing a reed in a dream signifies an evil property or object from which wickedness and distress arise. To see a bower made of reeds signifies deliverance from sorrow and grief and abundant sustenance.

According to Jābir al-Maghribī, the reed also signifies the disclosure of secrets, false words, and ostentation. To see that the reed one has seen is covered with precious metals signifies the valuable possessions and wealth that the dreamer will acquire in this world. To build a house with these covered reeds and enter it and dwell therein signifies entering Paradise with all the members of one’s household and living in a pavilion of Paradise.

To see sugar cane in a dream signifies straitness of sustenance. It indicates that the dreamer will have difficulty making his living in this world. According to ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī, seeing sugar cane in a dream is interpreted as maintaining a pure and honorable family life, possessing a firm knowledge of divine unity, fulfilling religious obligations such as fasting and prayer, or serving a great statesman.

To see the reed in one’s field lying upon the ground signifies the destruction of that place and the exposure of the sins of those living there. According to the report of Ibn Kathīr, seeing a reed in a dream signifies the return of property that had slipped from one’s hand.

To see oneself counting the joints upon a reed signifies that as many years of life remain as the number of those joints; according to one report, it also signifies marrying and entering into a marriage contract. To see a reed being peeled and cleared of its husks signifies that, if one is imprisoned, one will be released; and if one has been dismissed from a job, one will return to it.

To see oneself chewing sugar cane and sucking its sweetness signifies attaining something one hopes for; but to see that what one sucks is not honey but bitter water is interpreted contrariwise. Whoever sees himself straining sugar cane and extracting its juice will live amid cheapness and abundance. According to some interpreters, sugar cane is interpreted as benefits wrested from miserly people.

According to another report: To see a reed in a dream signifies despicable people and evil speech. If a person sees that he leans upon a reed found in his hand, it indicates that only a short period remains of that person’s life and that he will become poor and die in need. The reed in a dream signifies an irreligious, faithless, and thrifty person. To see a reed made into a pen signifies affectation, litigation, and performing deeds for the sake of display. At times, seeing a pen-reed signifies an evil property or object brought about through wickedness and distress, or a gift that will come from Persia. Sugar cane signifies sustenance earned through toil and hardship, and at times a quarrel in the street or in places where the reed is seen. At times, sugar cane also signifies a pure and honorable progeny, or the “Knowledge of Divine Unity,” which is the noble root and foundation of every good, or fulfilling the obligations of fasting and prayer.

Ibn Sīrīn: To see a reed in a dream signifies the worst of people, or it may signify becoming immersed in a low and repulsive conversation. Leaning upon a cane made of reed indicates that such a person has little of his remaining life left, and it may also be interpreted as becoming poor before death. The reed likewise represents a miserly person who is loyal to nothing and has no respect for general norms or ideals. To see the strips of reed transformed into strips of silver or gold signifies beautiful and valuable deeds. Reeds also indicate abundance and wealth obtained through lawful earnings, a chaste and pure spouse, or righteous children.

Nevertheless, reeds in a dream also represent hypocrites; hearing their sound signifies an argument or quarrel.
