To descend into the depths of the sea and then emerge in a dream signifies the blessings of this world; extracting pearls and the like from its depths, sustenance; scooping water from the sea into one’s hands and putting it into a vessel or into a ship, boat, or the like, a long-lived child; a turbulent sea, Hell, anguish, and sedition.

To perform ablution or bathe in the sea in a dream signifies goodness and favorable developments for everyone; oceans, advancing in the outward and inward sciences; the sea, remembrance of Allah, glorification, and proclaiming His oneness; a sea whose water is sweet and clear and whose waves are gentle, a believer; a sea whose water is bitter, whose waves are rough, and which is gloomy, an unbeliever; the sea, swearing an oath, faith for the unbeliever, repentance for the sinner, and the constriction of a person’s heart.

According to Daniel, peace be upon him: To see the sea in a dream is invariably interpreted as a great personage of the state. To see the sea pure, calm, smooth, and without waves signifies a just ruler; to see it turbulent signifies a tyrannical ruler. Whoever sees himself drinking water from the sea will receive goodness and benefit from the great ones of the state. Whoever sees himself drinking all the water of the sea until it is finished will attain a high office and receive goodness and benevolence.

Whoever sees himself traveling upon the sea in a dream will embark upon a journey. He will be delivered from sorrow and distress. Whoever sees that the sea lies as an obstacle between himself and the place to which he is going, if he is a traveler, will be unable to set out; or an obstacle will be placed in his affairs by the government. Whoever sees himself sinking in a sea or lake whose water is salty or bitter and turbid will fall into severe distress.

Whoever sees himself striving to swim in the sea in a dream will enter an undertaking and occupy himself with it. According to one account, he will be imprisoned and will struggle with courts of law. Whoever sees himself remaining beneath the water will be killed. According to one account, he will die without repenting of his sins.

According to Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi: To see the sea in a dream is interpreted as a strong, large-bodied, just, and compassionate statesman; for a merchant, his merchandise; and for an apprentice, his master. Whoever sees the sea in a dream will obtain the things he desires.

Whoever sees himself entering the sea in a dream will meet a great ruler or attain a great position. Whoever sees himself sitting or lying at the seashore will enter the service of the state.

Whoever wishes to take water from the sea in a dream seeks something from the government. Whoever sees himself filling a vessel with seawater will acquire property and possessions from Allah, Most High. He will live with state and prosperity. To see the water of the sea withdraw until its bed becomes visible is a sign that a calamity will befall that land.

To see oneself standing upon the sea in a dream signifies attaining a position one did not hope for; to see oneself swimming and reaching the shore signifies recovery if one is ill, wealth if one is poor, and deliverance into ease if one is sorrowful and distressed; to see oneself sinking in a turbid and muddy sea signifies calamity; to try to swim in such a sea signifies completing a difficult task.

To disappear from sight while swimming in a dream signifies death; to see oneself dying by drowning in the sea signifies dying as a martyr.

According to Ibn Sirin: Whoever sees himself entering the sea, sinking all the way to its bottom, and becoming buried in the sands will suffer harm from the government. Whoever enters the sea and is unable to swim will be imprisoned. Whoever sees himself on the verge of drowning in the sea, with no one to save him and unable to see the shore, will suffer a calamity at the hands of the government.

Whoever sees himself drowning in the sea and then being saved will have many troubles in worldly affairs and will not be free of misfortune. Whoever sees the sea from afar will hope for something but will be unable to obtain it. Whoever sees himself walking upon the sea, with his feet not becoming wet, will be saved from the fire of Hell and will be a person beloved in this world.

According to Kirmani: Whoever sees himself drinking water from the sea, and the water is cold, will become involved in litigation with someone. If the dreamer is a scholar, his knowledge will increase; if he is a government official, his prestige will grow. Whoever sees himself drinking hot water from the sea will fall into calamity and distress. If the water he drinks smells foul and tastes bad as well, it is interpreted as his enemy gaining superiority over him. According to one account, it signifies that he will experience difficulty in his affairs because of the government.

According to Jabir al-Maghribi: To see the sea dry up in a dream signifies the death of the ruler or the diminution of his political power; to see oneself drink the sea until not a drop remains signifies that the dreamer will attain success in his affairs; to see one of the sea animals speaking with him signifies that the government will disclose its secrets; to see the sea surge and become disturbed while the sky darkens signifies rebellion and the multiplication of lies; to see oneself bring forth from the sea something fit to eat signifies obtaining lawful sustenance.

To see oneself drinking salt water from the sea in a dream signifies earning unlawful property; to drink fresh water from the sea signifies acquiring lawful property; to extract ore or a precious jewel from the sea signifies goodness and benefit; if the thing extracted is ugly, it signifies superiority over an enemy; if the dreamer is a scholar, it signifies an increase in his knowledge; to bring forth something evil from the sea signifies that the enemy will invade the land.

According to Ja‘far al-Sadiq: To see the sea in a dream is interpreted in six ways: property and the ruler, great personages, a scholar, knowledge, wealth, and work.

According to Abu Sa‘id al-Wa‘iz: The drying up of a sea—or lake—with sweet water signifies the death of the ruler; an overflowing sea, sorrow and distress; dying by drowning in the sea, dying outside the religion of Islam. To see the sea rise up from the earth signifies the death of an unjust ruler.

Whoever sees himself standing upon his feet on the sea will attain a blessing from the government. To see oneself emerging from the sea in a dream is interpreted as the dreamer recovering and being cured of illness. To see the sea in a dream signifies the fulfillment of desire and wish. Whoever sees himself entering the sea enters into the presence of the ruler.

Whoever sees himself wishing to take water from the sea desires to serve the state to the extent of the quantity of water he wishes to take, and will succeed therein to that degree.

Whoever sees himself taking water from the sea and filling a vessel with it will accumulate much wealth. Or Allah will grant that person such prosperity that he will amass wealth more powerful and extensive than the sea. The amount of knowledge and good manners learned by drinking from the sea corresponds to the amount drunk.

If a person sees himself cleaving the sea from one end to the other, his grief and sorrow will be lifted and he will be safe. Whoever sees himself drinking of the water of the sea will be afflicted by sadness and grief.

Whoever sees himself performing ablution and bathing in the sea in a dream—if he is ill, Allah will grant him healing; if he is in debt, he will repay his debt; if he is distressed, his distress will be removed; and he will be secure from the things he fears. If he is imprisoned, he will be freed from prison, and good things will come before him.

To see the sea in a dream is interpreted as happiness, the fulfillment of desires and wishes, wealth and money, work and art, and worldly affairs.

To see a stormy sea in a dream is interpreted as an unjust ruler. Conversely, a calm sea is interpreted as a just ruler. Alternatively, to see a stormy sea in a dream signifies undertakings for which you will labor greatly and upon which you will work very hard. These matters may concern money, or they may be things that you value spiritually.

To see yourself swimming in a stormy sea in a dream heralds that your anxieties will be replaced by peace. To fall into a stormy sea is interpreted as the occurrence of certain circumstances that will trouble you. To die after falling, although the dream may appear negative, heralds that you will be delivered from this troublesome condition that has befallen you. The reason this dream is interpreted in this manner is that those who die by drowning in the sea are considered destined for Paradise.

According to another interpretation of the dream, to see a stormy sea in a dream signifies that your life will change utterly. It means that you will attain happiness after matters occur one after another.

To see in one’s dream a blue, green, or turquoise sea—whatever its color—provided it is calm and beautiful, is interpreted as the person making great progress in his spiritual evolution. You may begin to view the events in your life from a different perspective. You may give an entirely different meaning to everything in your life. Matters that appear very important to you may suddenly seem empty and unnecessary. Situations and events that trouble, sadden, and concern you may appear simple and meaningless because your perspective has changed. Such a dream is a symbol of maturation and inner tranquility.

If the sea you see in your dream is blue, it means that you will experience an inner spiritual development that will add new meanings to your life.

To swim in the sea in a dream heralds that you will travel extensively. Even if you have no such plan, developments may enable you to go on holiday constantly. Alternatively, seeing yourself swimming in the sea in your dream signifies happiness in your love and professional life.

To emerge from the sea by swimming is interpreted, for imprisoned persons, as the end of their imprisonment. Imprisonment need not be physical alone. Your relationships from which you cannot escape may come to an end; if you have fallen into debt, you may be freed from it. The things in this world that make you feel imprisoned will disappear. For the sick, this dream also signifies recovery in a short time.

To see in a dream that you are swimming with difficulty in the sea and exerting great effort in order to swim signifies beginning a laborious undertaking. Another meaning of this dream is that the dreamer will fall into prison and have to deal with lawyers.
