Shroud

To be wrapped in a shroud in a dream as the dead are wrapped signifies death; if the shroud does not cover the head or legs, it signifies corruption in one’s religion. Seeing a shroud in a dream signifies repenting, covering one’s private parts, and keeping one’s affairs concealed.

Wearing a shroud in a dream signifies refusing an offer to commit adultery, or, for a bachelor, marrying a woman who is not his equal. Stripping a shroud signifies taking an interest in antiquities or hidden things. A shroud-stripper signifies a malicious person who investigates and seeks to find forgotten things, and also a base-natured person who is excessively inquisitive and enters and leaves every place.

The interpretation of seeing a shroud in a dream is that news of a birth or a death will arrive. Seeing oneself inside a shroud indicates that one will succeed in one’s working life. Seeing another person inside a shroud means that you will receive news of someone’s death. A shroud in a dream indicates that one’s life will be prolonged.

Seeing a shroud in a dream is interpreted as covering. Seeing oneself shrouded or walking about in a shroud signifies concealing the deeds one has committed in this world, or marrying a woman without equal. Seeing oneself lying in an open grave wrapped in a shroud signifies joining an association established for a good cause and helping the poor and needy; seeing oneself cast off the shroud and walk naked through an avenue or street signifies attaining worldly wealth beyond reckoning.

Seeing that one possesses only the lower part of a shroud and sits somewhere with the upper part of the body naked signifies that an awaited matter will occur later than its appointed time. Seeing that one has a yellow shroud upon oneself signifies that one will contract an epidemic illness. Whoever sees that a shroud is put upon him, his appointed time has drawn near.

According to Ja‘far al-Sadiq, a shroud is interpreted in four ways: worldly blessing, distance, remoteness, death, and illness. Whoever sees in a dream that he has made a shroud for a funeral, good will come to that dead person through him. If the shroud he made is for a well-known man, wealth will come to the dreamer. If it belongs to an unknown man, it is not auspicious. Whoever sees that he has removed the shroud of a dead person will follow that person’s path.

Taking the shroud of a dead person in a dream has two interpretations: if the dreamer is a religious person, money and property will come into his possession; but if he is corrupt of heart, he will become a talebearer and a spreader of sedition.

According to Abu Sa‘id al-Wa‘iz: seeing in a dream that a man is wearing a shroud signifies his inclination toward adultery. If he has not put it on completely, it means that he is being invited to adultery, but he will neither accept nor go. Whoever sees himself wrapped in a shroud as a dead person is wrapped will die, or his affairs will deteriorate. If his shroud is short, it signifies repentance; if it is long, it signifies that he has turned away from repentance. Whoever sees himself cutting a shroud in a dream performs good and meritorious deeds. Seeing that one searches for a shroud but cannot find it is not good. Seeing a shrouded man come to one signifies blessing.

According to some interpreters, it is good to see in a dream, while a dead person is being shrouded, that his shroud is large and ample. If the shroud is tight and short, it is not good. Whoever sees himself selling shrouds recites prayers for mercy upon the dead; whoever sees himself gathering many shrouds attains fame. Whoever sees himself distributing shrouds does good to everyone.

According to another narration: Seeing a shroud in a dream signifies covering the private parts. Sometimes this dream signifies keeping one’s affairs concealed, or, for a bachelor, marrying someone who has no equal. Whoever sees himself wearing a shroud in a dream invites another to commit adultery. However, he does not accept it. Whoever sees himself wrapped in a shroud as the dead are wrapped signifies that he will die. If the shroud does not cover his head and feet, it signifies corruption in that person’s religion. Seeing little of the shroud upon a dead person signifies that the dreamer is drawing near to repentance, while seeing much of the shroud upon the dead signifies that the dreamer is very far from repentance.

Seeing a coffin in which one is enclosed, wrapped in a shroud, signifies that you will receive news or attain a position of great rank.

Ibn Sirin: Seeing a shroud in a dream signifies covering the private parts or maintaining a secret relationship, concealing one’s deeds and displaying a deceptive appearance, or marrying an incompatible spouse. Wearing a shroud in a dream may also signify earning money through adultery. Seeing one’s shroud in a dream but not wearing it signifies that one will be encouraged to commit adultery but will avoid it. Being wrapped in a shroud like a dead person signifies one’s own death. If the head and feet remain uncovered, it signifies deficiency and corruption in religious matters. The smaller the shroud in which the dead person is wrapped, the nearer it signifies that one is to repentance; and the larger the wrapping and the more completely it is prepared for burial, the farther it signifies that one is from repentance.

It provides early awareness; the person sees risks before they grow and can choose a more solid path.

Neglect, haste, untrustworthy people or uncontrolled behavior can increase the difficulty.

In the interpretation, the themes of work and responsibility, success and reputation, the emotional tone in the dream, and how the symbol concludes in the dream should be evaluated together.
