A sword seen without a hilt, within its sheath, signifies the lady of the house; drawing the sword from its sheath signifies a child; a sword drawn from its sheath signifies fulfilling a command; and the sword breaking while within its sheath signifies the child’s dying in the mother’s womb.
The breaking of the tip of the sword in a dream signifies the death of the father, paternal uncle, or one who occupies their place; the breaking of the sword’s blade signifies the death of the mother, maternal aunt, or paternal aunt; and drawing the sword and raising it above one’s head signifies aspiring to a high station or wishing to harm someone, then abandoning that intention.
To strike someone with a sword in a dream and leave the sword at the place where the blow was delivered signifies showing kindness and hospitality to women; to strike someone with a sword yet see that no wound or mark of a blow appears where he was struck signifies saying words to someone that will have little effect upon him.
To strike someone with a sword in a dream and sever one of his limbs signifies the occurrence of something that will cause separation between the person struck and one of his relatives; girding on a sword signifies an important government office for one suited to it, and benefit for others; the sword-belt loosening and the sword dragging upon the ground signifies weariness arising in one’s work and profession; and the sword-belt breaking is interpreted as loss for a merchant, dismissal from office for an official, and grief and sorrow for others.

Whoever sees that the strap of his sword has lengthened and is dragging upon the ground will become weary of the work in which he is engaged. Whoever sees that the sword-belt is short will not persevere in the work he performs. The sword-strap breaking signifies dismissal from employment for an official; loss for a merchant; and distress for others.
Whoever sees in a dream that he is struck with a sword by someone whom he does not recognize becomes the cause of that person’s fame increasing. Seeing rust or crookedness upon one’s sword signifies a lack of esteem for the sword’s owner or for the dreamer, and that his word will not prevail. According to another narration, it signifies that his affairs will proceed contrary to his wishes.
According to Ibn Kathir: whoever sees in his dream that the sheath breaks while he is drawing his sword, if his wife is pregnant, she will die while giving birth. If he is unmarried, his reputation will be broken. If he is engaged in some work, he will leave that work. Whoever sees that he has been given many swords will become wealthy. Whoever sees that he draws his sword easily from its sheath will have an obedient child.
Whoever sees in a dream that his sword breaks together with its sheath will lose both his wife and his child. Whoever strikes someone with his sword but sees no blood flowing from the place struck wrongs that person without cause. If blood flows and it stains the clothes of the man who struck, this signifies unlawful property and that his property will leave his hand. Whoever sees that he has firmly fastened his sword around his waist will live a long life.
According to Jabir al-Maghribi: whoever sees in his dream that he possesses a sword of gold will receive benefit from the great. Whoever sees that he possesses a sword of iron will gain strength in his work and command. Seeing a sword of copper, iron, or tin is not good. Whoever sees that he possesses a sword of pewter or lead will receive good and benefit from a noble woman. Seeing one’s sword adorned with various precious stones signifies that good and blessing will come from the learned. If the dreamer is an official, his honor and esteem will increase. Whoever sees that he possesses a wooden sword will have affairs that are in disorder.
According to Ismail al-Asa: whoever sees in his dream that he has two swords, one fastened on his right side and the other on his left, will possess two occupations. Seeing that one’s sword has two edges signifies that one’s command is effective; seeing a great dignitary gird a sword around his waist signifies that strength and power will come from the government; seeing that one is given a sword signifies that one’s command will be carried out and one’s word will prevail; and seeing that one’s sword shines signifies that one will receive respect from the great.
The number of swords with which one girds oneself in a dream is the number of women whom one will marry. Whoever sees that he has a sword in his hand so heavy that he cannot lift it will hear very grave and evil words. Seeing oneself strike a stone with a sword and split it signifies overcoming one’s enemies through words; seeing a drawn sword in one’s hand signifies that one will prevail over one’s enemies.
Whoever sees in a dream that he takes a sword hanging somewhere or lying upon the ground will seek his right, find it, and receive it; seeing oneself play with a sword signifies entering politics; and seeing oneself strike right and left with the sword in one’s hand, damaging the objects around him, signifies saying words that will hurt the people. Seeing a sword within a sword-bag signifies protected property.
Seeing in a dream that one’s sword is broken, has fallen from one’s hand, has been forcibly taken from one’s hand, has been thrown away by oneself, has been stolen, has been pawned, has been lent temporarily to someone, or has been sold is interpreted in ten ways: dismissal, the death of a relative, superiority, a monetary penalty, enmity, deficiency, the death of a child, divorce, the death of a servant, and incapacity. According to another narration: the sword seen in a dream is a child. If someone sees in a dream that he fastens on a sword, he will become governor over a great province.
Whoever sees in a dream that his sword has become heavy and is pulling him toward the ground will become very powerful in his governorship and will obtain benefit. If he sees that the strap of his sword has been cut, he will be removed from the office in which he is employed. The sword-strap seen in a dream signifies a good government office. If someone sees in a dream that his wife gives him a sword-blade, or that he gives his wife one, this signifies that he will be blessed with a male child. If someone sees that he gives his wife a sword within its sheath, his wife will give birth to a female child.
If a man’s wife gives him a sword within its sheath in a dream, that man will obtain a male child from his wife. Seeing a sword placed to one side in a dream signifies a very great drinker of wine. If someone sees in a dream that the sheath of his sword is broken, this signifies the death of that person’s wife. If someone sees that he girds on a sheath without a sword, he will take a trust into his keeping. Whoever sees that the hilt of his sword has broken will lose his father or paternal uncle. Some interpreters said that his maternal aunt or mother will die.
Whoever plays with a sword in a dream, if he is connected with a government office, it signifies his skill; if he has a connection with preaching, it signifies his eloquence and fluency; and if he is connected with a child, it signifies his admiration for his child and his preoccupation with him. If the sword breaks while the sheath remains sound, this signifies that his wife will be saved but the child in her womb will die. If the sword breaks together with its sheath, the dreamer’s wife will die along with her child. The sheath of everything used with a sword and knife, such as the sheath of a sword and the last of a shoe, is interpreted as the man and his wife.
For an unmarried person, putting the sword into its sheath in a dream signifies marriage. Whoever sees that he has a sword longer than the sword of his enemy will overcome his enemy. Seeing that one’s sword has become blunt and does not cut signifies that one’s word is not heeded. If he strikes with the sword and it does not cut, the one struck will gain victory over the striker and prevail against him. If the sword cuts, the striker will prevail over the one struck. If he strikes with the sword and it does not cut, although blood emerges, the striker will assail the one struck with his tongue by lying.
If someone strikes a person’s neck with a sword in a dream, the person whose neck is cut will receive good from the one who cut it and attain great relief. If someone sees in a dream that another person strikes him with a sword and cuts off one of his limbs, this signifies that the one struck will travel to a distant place. If, by his striking, he separates one of the struck person’s limbs from him, the struck person will have abundant offspring, and they will disperse throughout the cities.
If someone sees in a dream that another person strikes him without his having engaged in an argument, kinship will arise between the one struck and the striker, either through marriage or for another reason.
Seeing a sword in a dream also signifies sustenance. At times, the sword signifies sovereignty or knowledge. If the dreamer is a stranger, it signifies that his wife or child is noble and honorable. If they are not noble, then it is property concerning which there is doubt, or the wife and child will be of a base lineage.
Ibn Sirin: Seeing a sword in a dream signifies a male child, a king, a clan, a tribe, a farm, sovereignty, or a woman. If the sword is interpreted as strength, it signifies diligence; if it is interpreted as speech, it signifies clarity of expression. If it is interpreted as the father, it signifies the father’s pride in his son. Seeing in a dream that one’s sword has become heavy and is being dragged with difficulty signifies being appointed to a difficult-to-bear task, though one will derive benefit from it. Giving the sharp edge of the sword to one’s wife in a dream signifies that she will give birth to a male child; giving it to her within its sheath signifies that she will give birth to a female child. A sword of iron signifies a male child; a sword of brass, a wealthy child; a sword of lead, an effeminate child; a wooden sword, a hypocritical child; and a rusty sword, an ugly child.
Drawing one’s sword from its sheath signifies the words one is ready to utter. If the sword is sharp, bright, and shining, his words will be sweet and true; if it is rusty or dull, his words will be coarse and false. If the sword is heavy, it signifies that he will utter words so burdensome that even speaking them will be difficult for him. A crack in the sword signifies that his words will be rejected and that his intention will cause distress. Seeing one’s sword fall to the ground signifies that he may divorce his wife. Seeing the sword standing beside him signifies that he is a man possessing authority. If the strap or cord breaks and the sword falls, it signifies losing one’s power. If the hilt breaks, it may signify the death of one’s wife.
Being given only a sheath, without a sword in it, in a dream signifies that one will keep something entrusted to him as a deposit. The breaking of the sword-hilt may signify the imminent death of the father, paternal uncle, maternal aunt, or mother.
