In a dream, seeing a sound is interpreted in direct proportion to the loudness or softness of the sound that is heard. To see one’s voice issuing forth loudly signifies being remembered with goodness; to see a feeble voice signifies falling from esteem and fear; lowering one’s voice signifies becoming humble and devout; and raising one’s voice excessively signifies tyranny. Likewise, to make one’s voice louder than that of a scholar or a respected person is interpreted as committing a shameful act and a sin.

Whether the sound heard in the dream is pleasing or unpleasant also bears different meanings. Every kind of beautiful sound, regardless of whom it belongs to, signifies relief and joy; all sounds that are unpleasant to hear signify sorrow and distress.

To hear the sounds of pure gold and silver, if they are in a state of friendship, signifies a beautiful word that the dreamer will hear from somewhere and will wish to have prolonged. To see a sound coming from silver coins signifies comfort, tranquillity, and fulfilling one’s word; to hear the sound of gold signifies glad tidings; the sound of metal coins signifies grave news; and the sound of coins without engravings signifies a word concerning piety.

To hear a person’s voice and speech signifies receiving goodness from that person in proportion to the beauty of the voice. To see in a dream that someone is calling out to you signifies a good name and fame among the people. Whoever sees in a dream that his voice comes out loud and powerful will be remembered with goodness among the people and will gain renown. Whoever sees that his voice comes out weak is the opposite of this. Whoever hears a loud human voice in a dream will attain a good position. If the voices of governors and high-ranking security officials are weak in a dream, it signifies that they will leave their offices and become wretched and humiliated.

Hearing a human voice from animals is interpreted as great benefits. The interpretation of the voices of individual animals, however, carries different meanings. It is expressed as sorrow, grief, fear, and distress.

The bleating of sheep signifies the gentleness and generosity of the lady of the house, or goodness to be received from someone; the bleating of a kid, and the voice of a lamb or ram, signify abundance and joy.

The neighing of a horse signifies a gift that will come from a brave person; the whinnying of a horse signifies honour and strength. The braying of a donkey signifies evil to be committed by a foolish enemy; the braying of an ass signifies uttering a curse against tyrants. The voice of a mule is interpreted as distress caused by a contrary person. At the same time, the voice of a mule signifies believing in an unsupported word and in doubtful things. The voice of a calf, ox, or cow signifies falling into sedition; the voice of a camel signifies travel and hardship. In addition, the voice of a male camel signifies striving in the path of God, beneficial trade, and a profitable journey.

The voice of a pig signifies prevailing over wealthy and foolish enemies and taking possession of their property. The voice of a gazelle signifies sorrow and yearning for one’s homeland.

The voice of a wild animal signifies sorrow, grief, and fear. The voice of a lion signifies awe and severity, fear of a tyrannical ruler, and bewilderment. The sound of a dog howling signifies becoming engrossed in empty words. It also signifies regret, hatred, and striving for oppression. The howling of a wolf signifies being threatened with theft or fearing a tyrannical person.

The voice of a leopard signifies astonishment and terror. It also signifies coquettishness and arrogance. It is likewise interpreted as a promise coming from a miserly and hesitant person, and as that promise being fulfilled.

The voice of a fox signifies cries and relocation. It signifies fear of fleeing and emigrating. It also signifies grief or the rancour of a liar or a base man.

The voice of a jackal signifies turning away from harm and evil and the necessity of focusing upon good and important affairs.

The voice of a cat signifies cries, tale-bearing, and speaking of a person’s faults behind his back. At the same time, the voice of a cat signifies evil to be committed by a thief or a sinful servant. It is also interpreted as abundance and cheapness. (The sound of a mouse signifies gathering together, affection, and sustenance. The squealing of a mouse signifies harm that will come from a drunken person or a thief.

The cooing of a dove signifies weeping, crying out, or marriage. At the same time, the voice of a dove signifies a Muslim, chaste, veiled, and learned woman. The voice of a swallow signifies a beneficial word or listening to the Qur’an. At the same time, the voice of a swallow signifies a preacher delivering a sermon and warning of torment. The voice of a crow accords with separation and news of death.

The voice of an ostrich signifies attaining a brave and prudent helper. If the voice of the ostrich is displeasing to the dreamer, an act of shame will befall him. Most interpreters say that they likewise do not regard the voices of waterfowl, peacocks, and chickens as good, and that their voices signify sorrow and grief.

The croaking of a frog signifies setting out upon a road, hearing sounds of joy or glad tidings, and entering the service of a learned person, a leader, or a sultan. Some interpreters say that the croaking of a frog is an evil word.

Voices coming from the unseen, and all voices whose nature is to command, forbid, frighten, warn, give glad tidings, or convey information, are equivalent to the feeling they produce in the dream.

If a person hears in a dream certain indistinct and lost voices and cannot comprehend what sort of voices they are, it indicates that he will receive inaccurate news concerning a problem related to him. If the voice is beautiful, it is good news; if the voice is bad, it is bad news.

If a person hears strange voices in a dream but cannot recognise them, it is interpreted as receiving inaccurate news concerning an issue that concerns him.

Ibn Sirin: In a dream, the human voice represents a person’s fame or renown, and the weakness of its power reflects his mental or physical condition. Raising one’s voice in a dream signifies presiding unjustly over a community. Hearing a human voice in a dream signifies undertaking an important responsibility. If the human voice comes from an animal in a dream, it indicates great benefits, especially if the animal speaks pleasant and soothing words or speaks the truth. Raising one’s voice above that of a person of knowledge, a shaykh, or a teacher in a dream signifies committing a sin. A weak voice in a dream represents a man. Deliberately lowering one’s voice may signify being indebted to someone or humility.

If an authoritative man or a policeman lowers his voice in a dream, it signifies that he may be dismissed from his post or reprimanded and punished for his bad conduct. The ringing sound of small coins in a dream represents sedition, temptation, or quarrelling among brokers or money-changers. The rattling of money in a dream may also signify good or bad news; or, if given as a sign of friendship or as a bridal gift, it may signify beautiful words pleasing to hear or a word of wisdom. If the jingling of money is made in jest in a dream, it represents a quarrel that one does not wish to end. The sound of a wasp represents a person who slanders others or one whose evil cannot be removed without the aid of someone like him.

The bellowing of a calf, cow, or ox signifies tumult in a dream. The grunting of a camel signifies a blessed journey, the pilgrimage, a successful business trip, or exertion and hardship.

The roar of a lion in a dream signifies alarm, prestige, fear, or being threatened by a person of authority. In general, the sounds of animals in a dream signify difficulties or fear. The neighing of horses in a dream signifies invasion or power. The barking of dogs in a dream signifies empty speech, meddling in the affairs of others, regret, the intention to harm others, hostility toward others, or discord. The squeaking of a mouse in a dream signifies profit, reunion, affection, and peace; or it may signify harm that one may suffer because of an interfering person or a thief. The crying of a female gazelle in a dream signifies yearning for one’s homeland. The barking of foxes in a dream signifies a warning to flee or passing from one field to another; or it may signify suffering from jealousy, treachery, or falsehood. The howling of a wolf in a dream signifies theft or fear of a ruthless thief. The barking of a jackal in a dream signifies a well-intentioned undertaking, an approaching evil, the cries for help of women, or the wailing of people who have lost all hope.

The sound of a pig in a dream signifies benefiting from a foolish enemy and plundering his property. The sound of an ostrich in a dream signifies hiring a trustworthy and courageous servant or taking on a new employee for one’s work. Most dream interpreters do not like to interpret the meaning of the voice of a peacock or a chicken, and state that these generally signify sorrow and distress; others interpret the cawing of crows as signifying separation or announcing someone’s death. Nevertheless, any ugly or coarse sound in a dream signifies sorrow and distress, while any pleasant sound in a dream signifies happiness and joy.
