Water and Drinking Water

Seeing flowing water in a dream is interpreted as sustenance, livelihood, ease, purification, benefit, blessing, delight, death, grief, a child, justice, sedition, spoils, accumulated wealth, and cheapness.

According to Ibn Sirin: Seeing water in a dream signifies life. Whoever drinks water in his dream attains a good life. If the water seen is pure and clear, it signifies goodness and benefit; if it is turbid, it signifies grief and straitness of livelihood. Whoever sees a woman giving him water becomes known among the people as a liar. Stagnant water is weaker in interpretation than flowing water. According to one narration, stagnant water signifies imprisonment.

Whoever sees in a dream that he has fallen into stagnant water will be imprisoned. Salt water signifies grief; turbid water signifies straitness of livelihood. Seeing black water in one’s house signifies that the house will be destroyed; drinking of this water is interpreted as blindness of the eyes. Foul-smelling water signifies unlawful property; yellow water signifies severe illness.

Seeing in a dream that water has disappeared into the ground is interpreted, for those who are officials or laborers, as being dismissed from their employment; for others, it signifies living without receiving assistance. Seeing very hot water signifies grief and distress for the eminent rulers of the state.

According to Kirmani: Seeing hot water signifies illness and sorrow. Seeing oneself carrying water in one’s skirt signifies deficiency in one’s property and worldly affairs. Whoever sees that he has filled a bottle with water and drinks from that water, his wife will conceive. If the bottle breaks, the mother will die during childbirth while the child will live. If the dreamer is unmarried, he will marry and his sustenance will increase. (Whoever sees in a dream that he gives water to someone without taking payment performs a good deed; according to one narration, he will have a building constructed somewhere. Whoever draws and drinks water with a metal vessel in his hand will fall into distress and hardship. Wherever it may be, abundance of water is interpreted as goodness. A small amount of water is also an indication of safety for the people.

Seeing water poured out in a place in a dream signifies spiritual bounty and blessings in that place. Seeing pure and clear water in one’s house, in whatever manner it may be, signifies a good and happy life and abundant sustenance; seeing turbid water signifies loss and difficulty in livelihood.

Whoever sees himself in water in a dream will be occupied with a difficult undertaking. Whoever enters the water with his garments but sees that the garments do not become wet possesses strength in religion. His health is good, and all his affairs will be sound and proceed properly. Whoever turns water toward his house or garden will marry; whoever sees water splashing upon him will attain goodness and benefit. If this water is turbid and foul-smelling, its interpretation is the opposite.

According to Ja‘far al-Sadiq, may Allah be pleased with him: Seeing water in a dream is interpreted in five ways: fidelity, strength, difficulty in religion, and companionship with the great.

According to Abu Sa‘id al-Wa‘iz: Whoever sees that he has been given water in a goblet will have a child. Seeing oneself drink pure water from a glass signifies receiving goodness from one’s spouse and children. Drinking water from a bottle is interpreted for a man; drinking water from a metal vessel is interpreted for a woman.

Seeing oneself drink water from a glass in a dream signifies that one’s wife does not obey him and that her character has deteriorated. Whoever sees that he drinks more water than he drinks while awake will have a long life. If the water he drinks is pure and clear, it signifies safety from his enemy and deliverance from difficulty in his livelihood.

Washing one’s hands in water in a dream signifies proper management of one’s property. According to some interpreters: Whoever looks at water and sees himself within it will show goodness and generosity toward his household. Whoever sees waters spilled upon the ground will spend from his property. Seeing waters flowing beneath a bridge or arch signifies that the people will receive goodness from someone who assists them. Whoever takes from this water will receive goodness and benefit from such a person.

Whoever sees in a dream that he has diverted the water of the sea and caused it to flow to one side will acquire property from a godless person. Whoever wishes to preserve water in a vessel through which water flows away, such as a sieve or strainer, will become attached to someone from whom he derives no benefit. Waters seen in many vessels are interpreted according to the interpretations pertaining to what lies outside the vessel in which they are contained.

Keeping water in anything in a dream signifies a long life. The water he spends represents the part of his life that has passed; what remains represents the remainder of his life. If he drinks all the water, it means that his appointed time has arrived. Juices of fruits or vegetables extracted by any means, whether through medicine or squeezing, are interpreted as sustenance and benefit.

According to ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi: Seeing water in a dream is interpreted as a good life. Seeing water in one’s house signifies happiness, accumulated wealth, spoils, and an abundance of goodness.

Drinking water in a dream signifies safety from the enemy and a blessed year for the dreamer. Seeing oneself drink more water than one habitually drinks while awake signifies longevity.

Seeing oneself drink a glass of water without becoming quenched signifies that one’s spouse has betrayed him. Whoever puts his hand into water pursues property and possessions. Whoever sees that he possesses a jar full of pure water will consume an inheritance. Whoever travels about seeking water will be accused among the people of lying and slandering this person and that. Since stagnant water is interpreted as feeling, whoever sees that he has fallen into such water will be imprisoned. Foul-smelling water signifies poverty, straitness of livelihood, and distress.

Seeing bitter water in a dream signifies a bitter life; very hot water signifies difficulty in livelihood; turbid water signifies unlawful property; yellow water is interpreted as illness. Whoever falls into deep water and rolls all the way to its bottom will become very wealthy. According to one narration, falling into water signifies relief and joy. Overflowing and surging water is interpreted as torment and corruption.

Seeing waters overflow in a place and enter as far as the houses signifies that a great upheaval will occur there; seeing water flow over the roof of one’s house signifies a calamity that will occur very soon. According to one narration, seeing water in a dream signifies marriage for the unmarried, a husband for a widowed woman, sustenance for the poor, an increase in property for the wealthy, recovery for the sick, and deliverance from grief and distress for everyone.

Seeing water overflow from a handkerchief, purse, or the hem of one’s garment signifies pride in one’s property and in the course of one’s way of living. Whoever sees that his wife is pregnant and drinks a bottle of water, if he is married, will come into an inheritance.

Seeing oneself washed with cold water in a dream signifies that, if the dreamer is ill, he will recover; if he is poor, he will become wealthy; if he is sinful, he will repent; if he is detained, he will be released; and if he is in debt, he will pay his debt. If he fears something, he will be delivered from that fear.

Whoever sees in a dream that he draws water from a well will acquire wealth. Seeing oneself drink the water of the sea while it is turbid signifies suffering a hardship from the government; seeing oneself drink all the water of the sea signifies a great illness; seeing oneself find and drink water while thirsty signifies that the crops will be abundant that year; seeing oneself drink by sucking up the water signifies grief; seeing oneself drink water from a jar or ewer signifies that, if unmarried, one will marry, and if married, one will benefit from a woman. (Seeing oneself in a dream neither thirsty nor in need of drinking water is interpreted as goodness. Whoever sees that he is not thirsty in a dream will attain an ample livelihood.

According to Abu Sa‘id al-Wa‘iz: Whoever sees that he drinks cold water in a dream will acquire lawful property. Hot water signifies unlawful property; sweet water signifies lawful money easily earned; bitter water is interpreted as unlawful and wealth difficult to obtain.

According to Daniel, peace be upon him: Seeing oneself drink water and seeing oneself free of need is better than seeing oneself thirsty. Seeing oneself drink several glasses of water yet not having one’s thirst quenched signifies that one is exceedingly covetous in the life of this world.

With the right perspective, it can signify restoring balance, recovery, and developing a new understanding.

Uncertainty, indecision, or a tendency to take on excessive burden may be observed.
