Your birth chart contains planets, houses, and aspects. It also includes calculated points: sensitive degrees derived from the distance between two celestial bodies that have no physical counterpart in the sky. In classical astrology, these are called lots (from the Greek kleros), known as Arabic points as they were introduced to the West through medieval Arabic astrology.
The best known is the Fortune Point — but the real interest lies in how this point is calculated. This is where modern and classical branches of astrology clearly diverge.
What is a Lot? “Taking the Distance”
Most modern books define the lot with an algebraic formula: A + B − C = D. Mathematically this is correct but it obscures the geometric structure of the lot and differs quite a bit from what is described in classical texts.
The classical definition is clearer: measure the distance between two points, then take that same distance starting from the Ascendant. For the Fortune Point, this means: measure the distance from the light of the chart to the other light, and count that distance from the Ascendant. Wherever it lands is where the Fortune Point is.
The critical detail here is that the distance is directional: it is always measured from the light of the chart to the other light. This directional matter is the source of all the discussions below.
Sect: Is Your Chart Day or Night?
In classical astrology, every chart is either a day (diurnal) or a night (nocturnal) chart. The distinction is simple: if the Sun is above the horizon (in the 7th to 12th houses), it is a day chart; if below (in the 1st to 6th houses), it is a night chart.
In a day chart, the light of the chart is the Sun; in a night chart, it is the Moon. In classical calculations, the lot formula changes direction accordingly:
| Chart | Fortune Point | Spirit Point |
|---|---|---|
| Day | Ascendant + Moon − Sun | Ascendant + Sun − Moon |
| Night (classical) | Ascendant + Sun − Moon | Ascendant + Moon − Sun |
So in classical tradition, the Fortune and Spirit points switch places in the night chart. To put it in algebraic terms:
- Fortune = Ascendant + non-sect light − light of the chart
- Spirit = Ascendant + light of the chart − non-sect light
What Does Modern Astrology Do?
Modern astrology has largely lost the concept of sect; it is not emphasized even in places where it is recognized. If there is no sect, there is no point in switching the direction of the lot — that’s why in modern usage, the formula remains fixed without distinguishing between day and night:
- Modern, every chart: Fortune = Ascendant + Moon − Sun
- Modern, every chart: Spirit = Ascendant + Sun − Moon
Conclusion: in day charts, both schools yield the same result. In night charts, however, they discover two different points — often dozens of degrees apart, frequently in entirely different houses. The most common reason two sources give you different Fortune Points is this; one is not wrong, it belongs to a different school.
How to Calculate Manually?
The formulas work with absolute longitudes measured from 0° Aries. Here is the table for converting signs to degrees:
| Sign | Add | Sign | Add |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 0 | Libra | 180 |
| Taurus | 30 | Scorpio | 210 |
| Gemini | 60 | Sagittarius | 240 |
| Cancer | 90 | Capricorn | 270 |
| Leo | 120 | Aquarius | 300 |
| Virgo | 150 | Pisces | 330 |
Example: Ascendant 23° Aries (= 23°), Sun 22° Leo (= 142°), Moon 14° Leo (= 134°). The Sun is between the Ascendant and Descendant, meaning below the horizon → night birth. Using the classical night formula: 23 + 142 − 134 = 31° → 1° Taurus. However, with the modern formula, it is 23 + 134 − 142 = 15° → 15° Aries. The same chart yields two different Fortune Points.
If the result exceeds 360, subtract 360; if it becomes negative, add 360.
Five Classical Points
| Point | Formula (modern) | What It Represents |
|---|---|---|
| Fortune | ASC + Moon − Sun | Physical well-being, material flow, what life easily gives you |
| Spirit | ASC + Sun − Moon | Will, intention, what you give to the world — the active counterpart of Fortune |
| Love | ASC + Venus − Sun | Style of attraction, direction of desire |
| Marriage | ASC + Venus − Saturn | The theme of attachment, lasting partnership |
| Death | ASC + Saturn − Moon | Themes of closure, transformation, endings |
The Fortune and Spirit pair is especially important: in classical texts, one is read as “what is given to you”, while the other is “what you do”. One is passive, the other is active; they should be considered together.
How to Interpret Lots?
- In which house? The house of a lot indicates where that theme will manifest in your life. The Fortune Point in the 10th house is related to career, while the one in the 4th house relates to home and roots.
- In which sign? It gives the style of the theme.
- Where is its ruler? In classical approach, the ruler of the sign where the lot is found is as important as the lot — often even more crucial.
- Which planet is conjoining it? Lots need to be in close orb; aspects outside of conjunction are generally considered weak.
A word of caution: lots are calculated points and not physical bodies in the sky. Thus, they are extremely sensitive to the exact time of birth — as they are based on the Ascendant, any minute discrepancy in your recorded time shifts the lot as well. If you are uncertain about your time, it is more logical to first look at rectification before engaging in lot interpretation.
Arabic Lots on AstroMax
The calculation of Arabic Lots on the Charts page extracts the five points (Fortune, Spirit, Love, Marriage, Death) from your birth data with the accuracy of the Swiss Ephemeris (Swiss Ephemeris) and presents each as sign + degree.
Let’s be clear: the calculation uses the modern convention — meaning the Fortune Point is found with Ascendant + Moon − Sun in both day and night, not switching direction based on sect. If you were born during the day, this coincides exactly with the classical result. If you were born at night and follow a classical/traditional school, mentally switch the Fortune and Spirit points displayed on the screen — your classical Fortune Point is the degree that appears as “Spirit Point” on the list. This is a conscious choice to remain neutral in the debate over which formula is “correct”; however, since it’s not possible for us to know which school you belong to, we must state this here.
Where to Go from Here?
Lots are not read in isolation; they gain meaning alongside the rest of the chart. A logical sequence:
- First, read the Fortune Point in detail — it is the most commonly used of the five points.
- Refresh your understanding of Houses and sign rulers; lot interpretations entirely rely on these two.
- If you are interested in classical techniques, the practical branch of the same tradition, horary, is a natural continuation point — everything there also runs through the house rulers.
