The Noble Qur’an
Seeing the Noble Mushaf in a dream signifies knowledge and wisdom, inheritance, a trust, authority and power, lawful provision; a luminous and straight path; and the laws and principles upon which all matters pertaining to this world and the Hereafter depend. The Mushaf sometimes denotes a vineyard and garden, a vegetable garden, and places that gladden the heart.
Whoever sees in a dream that something from the Qur’an has been given to him, or that he has a verse from the Noble Qur’an in his hand, should retain that verse in his mind and consider its meaning. If the verse signifies mercy and glad tidings, it indicates benefit for one who acts according to the ruling of that verse. If the verse signifies punishment and warning, it indicates punishment to befall him because of a sin committed and a warning to the dreamer; and if the verse recounts the tales of what befell former nations, it denotes admonition and a lesson for the dreamer.
Reading the Qur’an, or something from it, in a dream signifies honour and exaltation, the acceptance of repentance, deliverance from poverty, and payment of a debt.
Reading the Qur’an and understanding its meaning in a dream signifies reason and intelligence; reading the Qur’an naked signifies following the desires of one’s lower self; completing the Qur’an signifies the fulfilment of one’s desire and wish; purchasing a Mushaf signifies spending wealth in the path of religion; while selling it signifies being deprived of knowledge, and is not a sign of honour or esteem.
Reading the Qur’an while altering its letters signifies turning away from the truth and failing to keep one’s word; altering the verses of the Qur’an signifies committing sin; eating a portion of the Mushaf is interpreted as knowledge, wisdom, and reading the Qur’an and acting according to its knowledge. Opening the Qur’an and placing it in a high position signifies rank and office for one worthy of them; opening the Mushaf and seeing that its writing has disappeared signifies lack of good; and kissing the Mushaf with reverence signifies success in good works.
Reading the Qur’an in a dream, or listening to someone reciting the Qur’an, is a sign of goodness, beauty, and happiness. Seeing the Qur’an, which is a very beautiful dream, is a sign that the dreamer is protected by God.
If a sick person sees the Noble Qur’an in his dream, he will recover from his illness. If he sees in a dream that he has purchased the Noble Qur’an, he will be delivered from every kind of evil.
Reading the verses of the Qur’an over the Qur’an itself in a dream signifies command, prohibition, honour, joy, and assistance. If a person sees himself openly reciting the Noble Qur’an without a Mushaf, it indicates that he is in the right in his lawsuit, that he fulfils the trust placed upon him, and that he is one who enjoins good and forbids evil.
Whoever sees in a dream that something from the Noble Qur’an has been given to him and that he has a verse from the Noble Qur’an in his hand should retain in his memory that verse and whatever is contained in the Qur’an. If that verse concerns mercy or glad tidings, and he acts according to that injunction, it signifies that he will obtain benefit from Allah, the Exalted. If the verse concerns punishment, it signifies that he is being threatened with the punishment and torment he will suffer because of a sin he has committed.
If a person sees in a dream that he is reading the Qur’an and understands its meaning, it indicates that he is an intelligent person and that Allah, the Exalted, has granted him reason and intelligence. If a person sees in a dream that the Qur’an is being read to him and that he is being instructed in goodness and wisdom, yet he does not accept these things, it indicates the affliction he will suffer or the punishment into which he will fall from the side of truth. If an ignorant person sees himself reading the Qur’an in a dream, he will die. Whoever sees himself reading the Qur’an naked, it indicates that he follows the desires of his lower self. Whoever sees himself eating the Qur’an, it indicates that he lives by means of reading the Qur’an. Whoever sees himself completing the Qur’an will earn reward in the sight of Allah, the Exalted, and will attain what he desires and seeks. Some interpreters have said: Reading the Qur’an signifies the fulfilment of needs and healing. If a person sees a group of people reading the Qur’an while they are naked, it indicates that those people are devoted solely to the desires of the lower self.
Whoever sees in a dream that he is writing upon the Noble Qur’an interprets the Qur’an according to his own opinion. If a person who is not a hafiz sees that he has memorised the Qur’an, he will attain dominion. Whoever sees himself listening to the Qur’an will have his authority and sovereignty strengthened and will reach a good outcome.
Whoever sees in a dream that he is reciting a verse whose place he does not know, or that he does not know the passage he is reading, if he is ill, Allah, the Exalted, will grant him healing and well-being. Whoever sees himself licking the Qur’an with his tongue will commit a sin. Reading the Qur’an in a dream signifies performing many righteous deeds and the elevation of one’s degree and rank.
Whoever sees himself reading the Qur’an or something from it will attain honour and exaltation. If he is a sinner, Allah, the Exalted, will forgive his sin and accept his repentance; if he is poor, he will become wealthy; and if he is in debt, he will pay his debt. If he is to give testimony, he will give true testimony, or he will deliver to its owner the trust in his keeping. If he reads the Qur’an with a beautiful voice and melody, he will attain honour, exaltation, and a good reputation.
Whoever sees himself reading the Qur’an while altering its letters turns away from Allah and betrays his covenant. If he does not know what he has read, such a person may sometimes give false testimony or speak of what he does not know. Whoever sees people listening to him while he is reading the Qur’an will be appointed to a duty, and according to his authority in that duty, whatever he commands and forbids will be accepted. Reading in a dream the surahs that are most often recited over the dead signifies the death of a sick person. Seeing people reciting the Noble Qur’an in a dream signifies the honoured persons and leaders of the community. Therefore, if a person sees a number of people gathered together in one place, a group of the honourable people of that place will gather there.
Ibn Sirin: The Qur’an in a dream is likened to a garden, for whoever looks upon it is as one who has seen a beautiful garden, and its verses are the fruits of knowledge and wisdom which the reader may gather. Seeing in a dream a verse of the Qur’an, a noble hadith, a saying of a prophet, or the learning of a craft signifies wealth after poverty or guidance after heedlessness. Seeing oneself reading from the pages of the Qur’an in a dream signifies honour, command, felicity, and victory. Reading the Qur’an from memory without looking at the book signifies proving the truth of one’s speech, possessing a just cause, piety, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.
Whoever sees in a dream that a verse from the Qur’an is recited to him should understand it, memorise it, and act according to it. If the verse contains mercy, glad tidings, or admonition, the interpretation of the dream is likewise. If the verses of the Qur’an that are recited contain counsel, he should fulfil what they require in order to benefit from them. If the verse heard contains a warning directed at unbelievers, a promise of punishment, or news of swift punishment because of sins, the person should immediately repent of his sins, whether or not the verses concern former peoples. Seeing oneself reading the Qur’an in a dream and understanding what it says signifies wakefulness, intelligence, faith, and spiritual awareness.
If a Qur’anic verse is recited to a person and he does not submit in the dream to the divine decree, it indicates that he will suffer harm from an authority, or that he will be subjected to a near punishment from Allah, the Exalted. The reading of the Qur’an in a dream by one who cannot read or write may also be interpreted as his death or as his reading his own book of deeds. Seeing oneself reading the Qur’an without genuine interest signifies following one’s own passions, personal interpretations, and innovations. Seeing oneself eating the pages of the Qur’an in a dream indicates that he earns his livelihood through his knowledge. Seeing oneself read the whole Qur’an and complete it in a dream signifies that he expects a great reward from his Lord and will attain everything he desires.
The reading of the Qur’an in a dream by an unbeliever: the verses of warning will benefit his life, the verses of punishment will be a warning from Allah, and the parables indicate that he must contemplate their meaning. Seeing oneself write the verses of the Qur’an on tablets of mother-of-pearl or upon a piece of cloth signifies that he interprets it according to his own passion. Seeing oneself write a verse upon the ground is interpreted as irreligion or atheism. It is also said that reading the Qur’an in a dream signifies the fulfilment of needs, purification of the heart, and success in life. Whoever sees in a dream that he has memorised the Qur’an, although he had not memorised it while awake, will possess great dominion.
Hearing the verses of the Qur’an in a dream signifies the strengthening of one’s power, the ending of one’s life with a praiseworthy conclusion, and protection from the envy of corrupters. If a sick person reads a verse from the Qur’an in a dream but cannot remember to which surah it belongs, it indicates that he will recover from his illness. Seeing oneself lick the Qur’an signifies committing a great sin. Reading the Qur’an signifies an increase in righteous deeds and the elevation of one’s rank.
