In a dream, to light a lamp signifies for a young man that he will fall into a very difficult situation; for a middle-aged person, that he does not yet possess sufficient experience to attain success in life; for a young girl, that she will go to a pleasant and entertaining feast; and for the elderly, that their fortune will unexpectedly open in a good undertaking. Like everything that gives light when seen in a dream, the lamp is interpreted as goodness.

Whoever lights the lamp in his dream will attain success in the work he desires. Whoever walks with a lamp in his hand will experience something good in his life. The cracking or breaking of the lamp is interpreted as a calamity.

To light a lamp in a dream signifies for a young woman that she will meet different people; and for a young man, that he is not yet sufficiently experienced to attain success in his work. For a young girl, this dream means that she will go on a pleasant and entertaining journey; and for the elderly, that they will be more fortunate than they expect in a good undertaking.

A lamp that gives beautiful light in a dream is a sign of happiness and success. A lamp that gives little light or has no bulb within it signifies sorrow and distress. A lamp whose light is burning signifies success in every matter.

To see a burnt lamp or oil-lamp in a dream signifies worship; to see an extinguished lamp or oil-lamp signifies laziness in worship.

According to Salimi: To see a lamp in a dream, if it is burning, is interpreted as success and property. To see a crystal or glass lamp in a dream signifies worshipping by obeying the commands of Allah (the Exalted) and offering supplication and prayer. Whoever sees himself lighting such a lamp will attain beneficence and a lofty station. If the dreamer is ill, he will recover. If he is distressed, his distress will pass, and he will be delivered from his sorrow like a man who comes out of darkness into light.

Whoever sees in a dream that he extinguishes the lamp will, with his own hand, hinder all his good works. Whoever sees a burning lamp extinguishing by itself: if he is ill, he will die; if he is a merchant, he will suffer loss. The lamp’s extinguishing by itself is not auspicious. To see a fierce wind blowing and extinguishing the lamp signifies that one of the great men of the state will commit oppression.

If the lamp in a dream is made of iron, cast metal, or another metal, it is interpreted according to the interpretation of that metal. To see the mechanism of the lamp defective signifies that your affairs will go badly; to see its glass broken or cracked signifies that there will be a deficiency in your station. To see its wick short signifies that the benefit coming from the state will diminish; to see its wick long signifies that you will receive much benefit.

Whoever sees in a dream that someone gives him a burning lamp will, through that person, receive goodness and benefit and become the possessor of an important undertaking. If the lamp is not lit, it means that this person is striving to prepare a good position for him.

To see oneself giving a lamp to someone else in a dream means that someone is trying to place him in a good position. Whoever sees the lamp break will die. According to one narration, he will leave his employment. According to some, the lamp signifies a beautiful wife and a servant.

Whoever finds or purchases a lamp in his dream will marry a woman possessing power and honor. If a woman sees that she purchases or lights a lamp, it means that she will marry a good and wealthy man. Whoever extinguishes the lamp by blowing upon it, if he is unmarried, will lose esteem because of his loose talk; and if she is an unmarried woman, she too will lose her worth because of her excessive talkativeness.

To see the burning wick of a lamp in a dream is interpreted as a person who gathers the people around him and does good for them. If the wick is itself burning, its interpretation is the opposite of this. Whoever sees in his dream that the wick has burned completely away, it signifies the death of a person beloved by the people.

According to another narration: A burning lamp, oil-lamp, or candle seen in a dream signifies, with regard to a pregnant woman, that she will give birth to a male and learned child; and with regard to a sick person, it signifies a husband. If a sick person sees in a dream that his lamp or oil-lamp has gone out, he will die. If a person repairs and sets right his burning lamp, oil-lamp, or candle in a dream and sees its light increase, then, if he has a sick person, that person will recover. A small oil-lamp whose light is weak and little signifies a female child for a pregnant woman. Some interpreters said that a burning lamp, oil-lamp, or candle signifies the disclosure of hidden matters.

If a person sees the lamp, candle, or oil-lamp of his own house beautiful and luminous in a dream, it signifies the soundness of the condition of the person who manages the affairs of that household.

If he sees the lamp, candle, or oil-lamp of his house without light and weak in a dream, it signifies the weakness and inactivity of the condition of the person who oversees the interior of that house. If a person sees the lamp, candle, or oil-lamp of his house extinguished, it signifies the disorder and badness of the affairs of the person responsible for that household, his not being praised, and the difficulty of his work. At times, this dream signifies the death of his wife, his child, one of his parents, or the person who oversees the affairs of his house. At times, this dream signifies the death of the dreamer’s wife. If a person sees in a dream that he has a lamp, candle, or oil-lamp in his hand and fears that it may be extinguished, it signifies the death of a sick person. If a sick person sees himself ascending to the sky with a candle and then descending again to the earth, it signifies that his soul will ascend to heaven. If a person sees in a dream that he obtains light from a candle, he will attain knowledge and exaltation.

If a person sees in a dream that he is trying to extinguish a candle by blowing upon it, he is trying to invalidate the work of a person who is upon the truth; yet he will be unable to invalidate it. Whoever sees himself walking with a candle during the daytime will have a strong religion and follow the straight path. If he sees himself walking with a candle at night, then, if he is among those who perform the tahajjud prayer, he will continue in that prayer. If he does not perform the tahajjud prayer, he will receive guidance in a matter concerning which he is perplexed and bewildered, and he will attain his aim. At times, the dreamer will be engaged in a sin and then repent of it.

If a person sees in a dream a candle burning and giving light between his fingers or limbs, a concealed matter of his will come to light, and he will be satisfied by this. If he sees that he has an extinguished lamp, candle, or oil-lamp, then, if he is a governor, he will be dismissed from his office; if he is a merchant, he will suffer loss; and if he is a righteous person, his wealth will depart.

To see a burnt candle without light in a dream signifies sorrow, grief, and hardness of heart. Lighting the oil-lamp, lamp, or candle at its proper time signifies a noble, renowned, and beneficial child. Some interpreters said that the lamps and oil-lamps of a mosque signify the wealthy among the learned, the pious, and the reciters of the Qur’an. If a person sees in a dream that the lamp or oil-lamp of a mosque has gone out, a learned person who frequents the mosque will die.

Like everything that gives light, the lamp is considered very auspicious in a dream. Whoever lights a lamp in his dream will succeed in the work he desires. Goodness will come into the life of the person who advances with a lamp in his hand. Through this, even difficulties will become imperceptible. The cracking or breaking of the lamp signifies a calamity.

To see a lamp in a dream signifies living a healthy and long life and bringing to light a matter that has until now remained obscure; to see an extinguished lamp signifies disappointment; to see oneself lighting the lamp signifies deliverance from distress, attaining ease, relief, and, if one is ill, recovery.

To see the lamp extinguishing by itself in a dream signifies, if the dreamer is ill, that his death is approaching; to suffer loss in one’s work; and to see the lamp break signifies death.

Ibn Sirin: To see a lamp in a dream signifies guidance, knowledge, the imam, or illumination. An extinguished lamp signifies sorrow.
