Oil Lamp

To see in one’s dream an oil lamp burning in one’s house and to extinguish it is interpreted in two ways: the end of one’s life or the death of one’s son.

According to one account, it is also interpreted as the dreamer’s leaving his employment. According to Kirmani, the oil lamp is interpreted as the servant of the household or the mistress of the house.

According to Cabir al-Maghribi: Whoever sees in a dream that he has lit an oil lamp with a lighter or a match, if he is married, will have a child; if he is unmarried, he will marry or take a servant; and if he has someone in a foreign land, that person will return safely.

According to Ibn Sirin: To see many lamps burning in a dream is interpreted as a just ruler, an equitable judge, and people occupied with worship. According to one account, a wedding, a banquet, or great rejoicing will take place in that locality.

According to Ismail al-Ash‘ath: To see a burning oil lamp in one’s hand in a dream means that the dreamer will have a child or attain a high position. If the dreamer is an evil and sinful person, he will repent. To see the oil lamp in one’s hand go out signifies the death of one’s son, the shaking of one’s position, or that one’s worship has not been accepted. Whoever sees a double-wicked oil lamp in his hand will have twin children.

According to Abu Sa‘id al-Wa‘iz: To see a burning oil lamp in a dream is interpreted as strength in religion and the attainment of one’s desire. Whoever sees himself lighting a lamp and illuminating his surroundings will acquire knowledge. Whoever extinguishes a lamp by blowing upon it will try to cause the work of a righteous person to be annulled, but will not succeed.

Whoever sees himself walking about by day with an oil lamp in his hand will be strong in his religion and constant in his worship. Whoever sees himself walking at night with a lamp in his hand will strive to learn religious knowledge. To see a burning oil lamp in one’s house signifies that a scholar will come to that house or that one will have a good child.

It can be read as a sign of easing, receiving support, gaining morale, or a fruitful development.

Underestimating opportunities, succumbing to comfort, or being late may reduce the positive effect.
