Our Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in a noble hadith: “Whoever sees me in a dream shall see me in the Hereafter with the nearest attribute and through a special meeting by my intercession.” According to another narration, he said: “Whoever sees me in his sleep has truly and genuinely seen me.”

According to the narration of Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): “Whoever sees me in his dream shall not enter Hell,” he said. It is also stated in a noble hadith: “Whoever sees me in his dream is as though he has truly and exactly seen me, for Satan cannot assume my form.”

Seeing our Master Muhammad Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream signifies that one will be delivered from all troubles and attain relief. Whoever sees his blessed countenance is given glad tidings of Paradise.

To see our Noble Prophet standing and speaking with oneself in a dream is a sign that the path followed by that person is good and accords with the approval of our Prophet. To see the Noble Prophet walking with his back turned signifies that one will set out on a journey but will obtain no good from it; whereas to see him coming toward oneself indicates that one will gain good from the journey one is to undertake or from the work one is to perform.

To see oneself sitting and eating at a table with the Noble Prophet signifies that one will receive a share of the food of Paradise, that the blessings of this world will increase, and that one will attain his intercession.

To see oneself travelling in a dream upon a camel together with our Master Muhammad Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him), while one’s camel always remains far behind the Prophet’s camel and, despite striving greatly to catch up with him, one is unable to make one’s camel proceed, indicates that one has acted contrary to the approval of our Master, the Pride of the Universe, and must repent.

Hazrat Abu Hurayra narrated as follows: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever sees me in his dream has certainly seen me, for Satan can never enter into my form.” Therefore, whoever sees our Master the Messenger of Allah, in whatever manner it may be, shall surely, by virtue of his blessed countenance, attain goodness and piety in the end. One shall be delivered from one’s sins and attain his intercession.

Whoever sees in a dream that he is praying together with our Master the Messenger of Allah in a mosque or masjid shall encounter no calamity in this world or the Hereafter; his affairs shall always proceed well, and his station in the Hereafter shall be Paradise.

To see oneself travelling together with our Master Muhammad Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream is a sign that one’s acts of worship have been accepted. Whoever sees that he is sitting with him in a quarter and conversing with him shall, if ill, find healing; if imprisoned, be freed; and if he has committed a great sin, then, provided he repents and seeks forgiveness, he shall attain his intercession and be delivered from his sins. Whoever sees the Messenger of Allah, the Chosen One, in a dream should take it as a warning that the outcome of an undertaking he is considering will be evil, and should desist from carrying it out. Whoever sees that blessed and noble person in a dream, in whatever manner, will benefit from the blessings of this world, and if he is in distress, he will surely attain relief. All grief and distress of himself and his family will depart from that household. If he is indebted, he will be delivered from all his debts. If there is illness in his family or in himself, he will find healing and recover from it. (To see oneself visiting our Noble Prophet at his blessed and noble resting place in a dream signifies, according to the interpretation of Ja‘far al-Sadiq (may Allah be pleased with him), that one has been given glad tidings of Paradise. To see the Messenger of Allah, the Chosen One, rise from his blessed grave and walk signifies the salvation of one’s Hereafter and that one’s appointed time is approaching. To see oneself visiting the blessed noble grave from outside, without entering within it, signifies that one must increase one’s worship and aid the poor in order to attain the intercession of the Noble Prophet.)

To see the blessed countenance of our Master Muhammad Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream, in whatever manner, is regarded as a sign that one has been given glad tidings of the blessings of the Hereafter, which are superior to the blessings of this world.

According to another narration, it has been related from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in an authentic hadith: “Whoever sees me in his dream shall also see me while awake, for Satan cannot assume a form resembling me.” In another narration: “Whoever sees me in his dream has certainly seen me in truth and reality.” The scholars have differed concerning the meaning of the hadith. Some of them have said that what the noble hadith expresses is that the dreamer sees the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the form and appearance in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was. Others, exaggerating in this matter, said that this is so only if the dreamer sees the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the form in which he was at the time of his death. Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy upon him) is among them. Another group of scholars said that seeing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the form in which he was while alive is not binding. Ibn Arabi is among them.

They have said that seeing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream with his known attributes is to see the Prophet himself. To see him in a form other than his known attributes is to apprehend his likeness. Therefore, seeing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in all circumstances is not a false or confused dream. Rather, that dream is itself true and real, even if he is seen in a form other than his known attributes. From all this it is understood that the correct meaning of the noble hadith is, as some scholars have said, that “regardless of the condition in which it is supposed,” the dream of the dreamer is true.

They said that if a person sees the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as an old man in a dream, it signifies attaining safety; if he sees him as a young man, it signifies the end of war; and if he sees him smiling, it signifies that the dreamer follows his noble Sunna. Some of these scholars also said that seeing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his known appearance and form and in his own condition signifies that the person is of good character, will attain renown, and will prevail over the one who is hostile to him.

To see the Noble Prophet in a state of anger in a dream indicates that the condition of that person is evil. Ibn Abi Jamra said that seeing the Noble Prophet in a beautiful form signifies the religious beauty of the dreamer; not seeing him in a beautiful form, or seeing a deficiency in some part of his body, signifies the deficiency of the dreamer. For the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is like a very radiant mirror: whoever looks into that mirror sees his own form. Although that mirror may be in a beautiful condition, the thing before it is reflected therein as it is.

There are great benefits for the one who sees the Noble Prophet in such appropriate forms in a dream. For by seeing the Noble Prophet in this condition, the state of the dreamer becomes known, and he awakens from heedlessness.

Whoever sees Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream will always have a good condition and a joyful heart. If those who see the Noble Prophet are under siege or in famine, they will be delivered from such conditions, and abundance will appear. If they are oppressed, they will be aided and victorious. If they are in fear, they will become secure.

To see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream in such a manner that one is unable to describe his attributes signifies that the dreamer is given glad tidings of a beautiful outcome in religion and in the world. Whoever sees the Messenger of Allah, the Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him), turning toward him, teaching him something, or allowing him to follow him in prayer, or sees the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) feeding him something good, clothing him in a suitable cloak or garment, or offering him a blessed prayer, shall attain sovereignty if he is worthy of sovereignty. If the dreamer is a scholar, he will act upon what he knows. If he is a devoted worshipper, he will reach the station of the people of miracles. If he is a sinner, he will repent.
