Staff (Cane)

If a person sees a staff in his dream, it is interpreted as meaning that the dreamer is an honourable, strong, powerful person who assists the people.

Whoever sees that the staff has broken: if he is an official, he will be dismissed from his post; if he is a merchant, he will become bankrupt. If he is neither of these, it is interpreted as meaning that he will be afflicted with a very severe illness, and that, on account of this illness, his strength and power will depart.

Whoever sees himself striking the ground with the staff will prevail over the land upon which he struck the staff, or over the person who is in that land and has seized it. The staff signifies command, prohibition, victory over the enemy, and attaining one’s desire and aim. This is because the staff is made of wood, and wood signifies a hypocritical man.

If a person sees in his dream that he is beating another person with a staff, it is interpreted as meaning that he will assail the honour of the one who was beaten by uttering vile words against him.

If a person sees in his dream that he strikes a stone with a staff and water flows from the stone, this indicates that, if he is poor, he will become wealthy, and if he is wealthy, his fortune will increase. At times, the dreamer attains sustenance without suffering hardship.

If a person sees in his dream that he is leaning upon a staff, this signifies that his wish will be fulfilled; and if a person sees a long staff in his hand in his dream, it indicates that he will attain his desire. Seeing a short staff in a dream is interpreted contrariwise.

Seeing a speaking staff in a dream signifies abundant sustenance and strength.

Seeing a hollow staff is interpreted as suffering loss and becoming poor. If the staff is hollow and he is himself leaning upon it, that person’s property will be lost, and he will keep this hidden from the people. Whoever sees that the staff has broken—if he is a governor, he will be removed from his office; and if he is a merchant, his trade will depart from his hands.

Whoever sees in a dream that he has turned into a staff will die shortly.

Whoever sees in a dream that he is walking upon a stick boards a ship. If the staff is a javelin, it signifies solitude; if it is of almond wood, it indicates that the dreamer will depart from his present condition, whether it be good or evil; and if it is of peach wood, it sometimes signifies that the dreamer is a hypocrite in his religion. At times, the staff signifies a serpent or sorcery.

Holding a three-pronged staff signifies being appointed to a very honourable and elevated position. Seeing that one has a staff in one’s hand in a dream indicates seeking assistance from an honourable and powerful person who helps the people.

Seeing in a dream that one has become a staff is interpreted as death.

Ibn Sirin said: Seeing a stick or a cane in a dream signifies a person of high rank and worth. Likewise, seeing oneself leaning upon a stick or cane indicates attaining one’s desire through the aid of a person of exalted rank and worth. Seeing the staff in one’s hand turn into a serpent is a sign that a friend will become an enemy.

Kirmani said: Whoever sees the stick in his hand grow longer will attain his desire; and whoever sees it grow shorter will not attain his aim. At times, seeing a staff also signifies succour and assistance, and that one’s aim will be accomplished.

According to another narration: A staff in a dream indicates a person possessed of a deviant religion. At times, the staff is a person upon whom reliance is placed.

With the right perspective, it can signify restoring balance, recovery, and developing a new understanding.

Uncertainty, indecision, or a tendency to take on excessive burden may be observed.
