Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq: There are seven interpretations of seeing a garment in a dream: 1—sound faith; 2—wealth; 3—honour and rank; 4—benefit; 5—ease in livelihood; 6—deeds; 7—justice.

There are four interpretations of wearing a new garment in a dream: 1—a woman; 2—a ruler; 3—property; 4—goodness and benefit.

To see in a dream that you are cutting your garment with scissors signifies that you shall obtain some small thing you desire.

To see in a dream that thieves have stripped you of your garments signifies, for one who has many wives, that discord shall arise among the wives.

Prophet Daniel (peace be upon him): A garment is interpreted as work and income. To see that you have a beautiful garment signifies that your work and income shall be good.

To see in a dream that you have a bad garment signifies that your work and income are bad; a red garment signifies that you shall become a person of joy and piety.

Wearing a green garment in a dream signifies that the garment you have donned is in its essence a garment of Paradise. [“Upon them are garments of fine and thick green silk, and they are adorned with bracelets of silver.”[96]]

A washed white garment in a dream signifies that the general state of affairs in work is good; a purple garment, disappointment; a torn garment, that your hidden affairs shall be revealed; and a woollen or felt garment, that you shall acquire property and attain your desires.

Seeing a regional garment in a dream signifies poverty; every kind of dirty garment, grief and sorrow; a paper garment, baseness; and garments made from the hides of animals signify goodness and benefit.

Garments without stitching, like a shroud, in a dream signify that your appointed time is drawing near and that you shall no longer be able to perform acts of worship; a garment made from a donkey’s hide signifies that you shall attain rank and position.

Allamah Majlisi: Seeing a garment signifies that you shall enter the house of this world; a white garment, that you shall become a person of esteem and righteousness; a yellow garment, abandoning worship; a green garment, that you shall be among the people of piety; seeing a heavenly garment, elevation; and seeing that your garment is impure or has become soiled signifies that you shall acquire wealth by unlawful means.

The Author: Wearing an old garment is interpreted as grief and sorrow.

Ibn Sirin: To see that you possess a dirty garment signifies that you are a corrupt person; to see that your garment has become stained with dirt or some other filth signifies that your worldly and afterlife conditions are not good.

To see in a dream that the dirt on your garment has been caused by dead creatures signifies that your worldly life is good but your afterlife is evil; to take off an old garment signifies deliverance from troubles and poverty.

To see in a dream that you are wearing a winter garment in summer signifies that your wealth shall increase according to the value of the garment you are wearing; to wear a summer garment in winter signifies fear.

Kirmani: To see that you are wearing a garment befitting your renown signifies that you shall advance in rank.

To see in a dream that you are wearing the garment of a sultan signifies that your affairs, which have been going badly, shall be set right; to wear the garment of a vizier signifies that you shall become possessed of abundant wealth, yet people shall censure you.

To see in a dream that you are wearing a doorkeeper’s garment signifies that you shall be deprived of the generosity of esteemed people; for a young person to wear garments worn by middle-aged people signifies that he shall benefit from someone.

To see in a dream that you are wearing the garment of an executioner signifies that you shall derive gain from someone; to wear the garment of an ascetic signifies that you shall become a person trusted by the people, and that you shall receive the deposits entrusted by those among the people who give things into safekeeping.

To see in a dream that you are wearing the garment of a merchant signifies that your work and income shall be at a good level; wearing the garments of righteous people is interpreted as the soundness of your religion.

To wear the garments of deceitful people in a dream signifies that, because of them, you shall suffer troubles and sorrow; to wear a labourer’s garment signifies troubles and sorrow; to wear a doctor’s garment signifies that your endeavours shall yield good results and that you shall become renowned among the people.

To wear a Jewish garment in a dream signifies that you shall do evil things through deceit and obtain bad results; to wear a Christian garment signifies that you shall do something by which you will be safe from both friend and enemy.

To wear the garment of a monk in a dream signifies that you are an adherent of innovation and shall abandon the right path; to wear the garment of a warrior signifies that a problem shall arise between you and someone.

To wear women’s garments in a dream signifies that you shall become distant from someone whom you respect and love, or from a friend; to wear a prisoner’s garment signifies that you shall experience trouble on account of a matter and shall become poor.

To wear a porter’s garment in a dream signifies that you shall become a trustworthy person, pointed out by all, and that you shall accept things entrusted to you by people; to wear a gravedigger’s garment signifies that you shall work in the service of a person without character.

To wear a priest’s garment in a dream signifies that you shall seek lawful sustenance from a good person; to wear a butcher’s garment signifies that you shall suffer harm; to wear a smart or showy garment is interpreted as meeting with a woman for the purpose of marriage.

To wear a new and unwashed garment in a dream signifies good; to wear a garment embroidered with gold signifies a woman of intelligence; to wear a sewn garment signifies goodness and benefit; to see a garment whose owner you know signifies that you shall attain your desire.

To see in a dream that you are wearing revealing garments signifies sin; selling an old garment signifies evil; seeing a thick and coarse garment signifies a poor person who is pious, religious, and trustworthy in speech. To possess a thick and coarse garment signifies that you shall befriend someone possessing these qualities and shall derive benefit from him.

To possess many thick and coarse garments in a dream signifies that you shall obtain property and blessings in an amount corresponding to what you saw; to find a newly purchased thick and coarse garment signifies that you shall marry a pious and wealthy woman and derive benefit from her.

Jabir al-Maghribi: There are two interpretations of seeing a garment: one pertains to religion, and the other to the world. A clean and new white garment signifies that both your religion and your afterlife are good; a tight and green garment signifies that both your worlds are bad; a torn and dirty garment signifies that both your worlds are in corruption.

A red garment in a dream is auspicious for both men and women; a black garment is auspicious for preachers, judges, and governors, but signifies grief for the common people; a dark garment signifies grief and calamity; and a robe, turban, and similar garments signify grief and distress for men.

A yellow garment signifies illness for men and marriage for women, or, if they are married, that their husbands shall fall ill; a green garment signifies religious faith for both men and women.

To see a living person wearing a green garment in a dream signifies the goodness of his religious faith; to see a deceased person wearing a green garment signifies felicity in the Hereafter for that person.

To see a person who habitually wears black garments wearing a black garment signifies good for that person; to see a person who habitually wears white garments wearing a black garment signifies worldly and otherworldly disappointment for that person.

To see in a dream that you are wearing the garment of a sultan signifies that you shall obtain benefit; to wear the garment of a scholar signifies that you shall benefit from scholars; to wear the garment of an ascetic signifies that you shall attach no importance to the goods of this world.

To see in a dream that you are wearing the garment of a wealthy person signifies that you shall become attached to worldly wealth; to see that you are wearing a Jewish or Christian garment signifies that you shall feel sympathy for Christianity or Judaism.

Ismail al-Ashʿath: To see a garment whose front is one colour and whose back is another signifies that you shall lose your respect among the people and be humiliated; to see yourself gnawing or eating your own garment signifies that you shall spend abundantly from your own property.

To see in a dream that you are wearing undergarments signifies that you shall remain for a long time on a journey you are about to undertake, or that you shall be imprisoned because of some matter; to see that your garment has been lost or taken from you, leaving you naked, is interpreted as a decrease in your esteem.

To see in a dream that some people have torn your garment signifies that you shall have a problem with your spouse and shall grieve; to see that your garment has been torn signifies that you shall have a problem with one of your relatives or with a friend.

To see in a dream that someone has taken your garment away, leaving you naked, signifies that you shall lose your esteem; to unfold a folded garment signifies that you shall undertake a journey.

To see yourself folding an unfolded garment in a dream signifies that, if you have a relative who has gone missing or whom you have not seen for a long time, he shall return; for a man, to wear women’s garments signifies that your property shall increase, but that you shall be in great fear; for a woman, to wear men’s garments signifies that she shall obtain goodness and benefit.

To find a garment in a dream signifies that you shall undertake a journey, and the length or shortness of the journey shall correspond to the length or shortness of the garment you found; to see that you have finished a garment whose sewing you had begun signifies that you shall be delivered from sorrow.

Isfahani: The best garment in interpretation is one made of cotton and containing no silk. A garment made of silk, cotton, or marten fur signifies property acquired by unlawful means; a garment made of coloured or raw silk signifies evil for men and good for women.

To see an old garment in a dream signifies that you shall suffer distress because of a person possessing authority; to purchase an old garment or wear an old garment signifies evil; to sell an old garment or take it off signifies good.

To wear a washed garment in a dream signifies repenting of sins; to wear a dirty garment signifies poverty; to wear a coloured garment signifies good for women and army personnel; to wear a smart or showy garment signifies evil.

Contemporary Ulama: To wear a golden garment signifies that you shall make a promise that is not very serious and shall fulfil your promise; to see a garment embroidered with gold signifies happiness, honour, and respect.

To possess a garment embroidered with gold in a dream signifies that you shall make a profitable transaction; to wear a garment embroidered with gold signifies that you shall suffer loss in business and pass through troubled days; to possess a beautiful garment signifies that you shall maintain good relations with others.

To wear an expensive garment in a dream signifies that your fortune shall be favourable; to wear a white garment signifies that you shall attain esteem; to wear a blue garment signifies happiness; to wear a red garment signifies arrogance; to wear a yellow garment signifies hypocrisy.

To wear a green garment in a dream signifies that one of your wishes shall be fulfilled; to wear a black garment signifies mourning; washing garments signifies that you shall be frugal; tearing a garment is interpreted as experiencing a sudden fit of anger.

To wear a dirty garment in a dream signifies that you shall make slight and scarcely noticeable advances in your working and commercial life; burning a garment signifies that you shall be exposed to betrayal or slander.

With the right perspective, it can signify restoring balance, recovery, and developing a new understanding.

Uncertainty, indecision, or a tendency to take on excessive burden may be observed.
