To see a new garment in a dream signifies promotion to a higher rank for an official; profit for a merchant; increase in wealth for the rich; relief for the poor; blessing for the farmer; and cheapness for other people.

The interpretation of seeing a new garment in a dream is lawful property; a clean garment denotes purity of heart; and a dirty garment denotes corruption of the heart. If a new garment is torn in a dream and the tear is sewn or mended, it signifies having a child; if one cannot sew the tear, it signifies entering prison. (To see a patched garment in a dream signifies illness for a labourer and blessing for others. A fine and bright garment signifies intending a good deed, being inwardly as one is outwardly, joy and gladness; for a woman, such a garment signifies attaining goodness and blessing.

To see a silk garment in a dream signifies inclination toward the world for the pious and the learned; for others, it signifies goodness and beneficence. An embroidered garment signifies adornment and embellishment for a woman; piety and rank for one devoted to knowledge; committing an offence necessitating punishment for the sinful; and smallpox for children. (To be given an embroidered garment in a dream signifies worldly gain coming from somewhere. A woollen or linen garment signifies good for all, men and women alike; gathering or storing such a garment signifies wealth; and a used garment signifies illness or travel.

To see a silk garment of a light, bright colour in a dream signifies delicacy and elegance for a woman.

To see a low-cut garment revealing a woman’s bodily contours in a dream signifies sedition and gossip; to see a red garment signifies, for a man, that the world will incline toward him and he will neglect the Hereafter; and wearing torn, ragged garments one atop another signifies death.

The garment’s being torn across in a dream signifies grief and sorrow; its being torn lengthwise signifies deliverance from grief and sorrow. A woman’s garment being torn in a dream signifies the disclosure of a shameful condition or suffering poverty.

To see old garments in a dream signifies that the dreamer will always be in abundance; whereas to see very elegant and expensive garments indicates that the dreamer places excessive value upon outward appearance and must correct this habit, for it will lead him to commit a very serious error.

To buy a garment or cloth in a dream signifies that the investments you have made recently will bring you a small profit. To distribute garments to the poor or to charitable societies in a dream is taken as a sign that the person who saw the dream will very soon receive the reward for a good deed he committed long ago and has long since forgotten.

To see old and torn garments in a dream is interpreted as remaining continually in prosperity. To see elegant and expensive garments, however, gives notice that the dreamer places too much importance upon people’s outward appearance and must abandon this attitude.

To see a stained garment in a dream indicates that gossip and troubles will be experienced. To see a green garment means that you will soon attain your aspirations. Whoever sees himself wearing a patched garment will come into money. In addition, a woman may turn your life upside down.

To wear a clean and beautiful garment in a dream signifies that the person will be greatly admired and will attain the station he deserves. A patched garment is interpreted as money; if stained, as unexpected expenses and gossip. It must also be interpreted according to its colour.

It is interpreted as office and employment. Whoever sees himself wearing a new garment in a dream will attain a higher office if he is an official; profit if he is a merchant; greater gain if he is wealthy; sustenance if he is poor; blessing if he is a farmer; and cheapness for the populace.

Whoever sees in a dream that the garment he is wearing has been torn and that he cannot mend it will be arrested; if he sews the tear, he will have a child.

To see oneself wearing a patched garment in a dream signifies blessing; to wear a garment made of silk signifies goodness. However, wearing silk is not good for religious scholars, for it signifies their inclination toward the world.

To wear a long embroidered garment in a dream signifies strength in religion if the dreamer is a righteous person; if he is not of good character, it signifies that he will be punished for the Hereafter; and if he is someone other than these, it signifies that he will contract smallpox.

To wear a garment made of linen in a dream signifies acquiring renown; to see oneself wearing a used garment is interpreted, according to some, as marriage, and according to others, as illness or going to war.

To wear a garment of spun silk in a dream is interpreted as the pilgrimage. To wear a coloured garment signifies courage and joy; to wear a torn and tattered garment signifies grief and sorrow.

To purchase a new garment in a dream is interpreted as lawful property; to purchase an old garment as unlawful property. The cleanliness of the garment is taken as a sign of goodness of heart; its dirtiness as a sign that the heart is evil.

According to Salimi: To see that the garment upon one has become wet and clings to one’s body signifies that a person intending to set out on a journey will not undertake that journey; and if he has intended another matter, that intention will not come to pass.

To remove the garment from one’s back and give it to someone in a dream signifies deliverance from poverty; for a man to see himself wearing women’s clothing, or for a woman to see herself wearing men’s clothing, signifies committing adultery.

To wear in a dream a sleeveless garment cast over the shoulders like a cloak or a shawl is interpreted as religion. Such people will be pious, and their prayers will be accepted by the Exalted God.

Washing garments in a dream is interpreted in several ways. To see oneself washing one’s garment because it is dirty signifies deliverance from grief and distress; to see oneself washing it because it is stained signifies committing a sin.

To wash a garment because it has a bloodstain signifies repentance; to wash it to cleanse it of filth signifies repentance in order to abstain from the unlawful; and to wash it because it bears a semen stain signifies repentance from adultery.

According to Ja‘far al-Sadiq: To see oneself washing one’s garment with cold water is interpreted in four ways: repentance, health, deliverance from difficulty, and freedom from fear. Washing it with hot water is interpreted as grief and illness.

According to some: To see a new garment in a dream is good. To see that you are wearing a new garment signifies that you will receive joyful news.

To see oneself removing a garment in a dream is interpreted inversely. To wear the clothing of the opposite sex signifies, if you are married, that a great amount of property and money will come into your hands or that you will inherit a great inheritance.

To see oneself walking about in a torn garment in a dream signifies that your creditors are pressing you greatly these days; if you are not in debt, it signifies that you have another sorrow and will soon attain relief. To see a group of people dressed in very beautiful garments is evidence that you will receive very joyful news.

According to another narration: To see a garment in a dream is interpreted as the person’s religion, livelihood, fear of God Most High, or glad tidings.

A man’s wearing a garment in a dream signifies the woman whom that man will marry; a woman’s dressing signifies the husband whom she will marry. Whoever sees himself getting dressed and then tearing his garment will have no further need of his wife. If the garment comes undone and its stitching separates, his wife or partner will part from him. The garment represents a person’s condition in religion and in the world.

To see oneself wearing a sleeveless garment in a dream signifies that, although poor, one’s religious devotion is sound. Whoever sees that the collar of his garment is torn will become poor. For one who sees that he possesses many garments, it signifies a great reward and abundant merit in the Hereafter.

If a person sees in a dream that a shirt has been given to him as a gift, it signifies good news. To see one’s garment torn and dirty signifies poverty and sorrow, and trouble and affliction that will come upon him.

For a woman to see herself wearing a new and spacious garment in a dream signifies the good condition of herself or her husband in religion and worldly affairs. To wear a garment in a dream signifies the honour and renown of the one who wears it.

If a person sees himself wearing a collarless garment in a dream, it signifies that person’s death. Whoever sees himself wearing a short garment that does not cover his knees will be deficient in his religion. If a person sees a verse written upon his garment, it signifies that he acts according to the Qur’an.

To wear a black garment in a dream signifies sorrow and grief for the one wearing it. Whoever sees himself wearing his garment inside out will have his condition changed. If a person sees that the collar of his garment is torn, he will become poor.

Whoever sees his garment torn from top to bottom in a dream will be delivered from sorrow. If he sees it torn across, it signifies words that will be spoken concerning that person’s honour and chastity.

If a person sees in a dream that his garment is torn at the back, he will be accused by words spoken concerning his honour and chastity. A green garment signifies religion. A white garment is likewise. To see a blue garment is not good.

To see a red garment in a dream signifies fame; a yellow garment signifies illness. A wet garment signifies hardship during travel; the wetness drying signifies the departure of hardship and severity.

If a woman sees in a dream that she is wearing men’s clothing, this dream is good for her in religion and worldly affairs. If a man sees that he is wearing women’s clothing, sorrow, grief, fear, humiliation and wretchedness will befall him. Then these conditions will depart from him. Whoever sees himself wearing a woollen garment will become an ascetic.

If a person sees in a dream that he is wearing a green garment, it signifies religion and worship for the living; for the dead, it signifies that their condition before God is good. Some interpreters said that whoever sees himself wearing a green garment, it signifies inheritance. A white garment is good for the one wearing it. For craftsmen, a white garment signifies stagnation in their work. For a craftsman, the greater the value of the garment, the more it signifies stagnation in his trade.

If a person sees himself wearing a garment he is not accustomed to wearing, some of the things he dislikes will befall him. Whoever sees himself wearing an ironed black garment with no white in it will receive bad news. Whoever sees himself covered in red garments, it signifies much wealth in which God’s due is owed. The dreamer should fear God and give the alms due upon his property.

For a woman to see herself wearing a red garment in a dream signifies relief and joy. A red garment signifies death for the sick and harm for the poor. Wearing a yellow garment or one dyed yellow signifies a wound for some people and malaria for others.

If a person sees himself wearing a red garment at times of feasts, weddings and gatherings, there is no harm in it. All yellow garments, in interpretation, signify weakness and illness. Whoever sees himself wearing a garment dyed in all colours will encounter something he dislikes, and he must seek refuge in God from the evil of that thing. To see oneself wearing a two-coloured, double-faced garment or a double-faced turban signifies that the person is one who manages the people of religion and the world. If this garment has been washed, it signifies poverty and debt; if it is new and dirty, it signifies debt and the sin he has earned. (To see oneself wearing a garment embroidered with various colours is good for one who sells fragrant things and beverages. For poets, it signifies anguish and severity and the disclosure of hidden matters; for the sick, the intensification of illness; and especially for wealthy women, it signifies people of foul speech.

Whoever sees himself wearing a coloured garment in a dream will, if qualified, become commander over farmers and agriculturists. If he is not qualified, it signifies abundance in the year and a plentiful harvest of grain. A garment of a colour different from those acquired signifies pride.

The marks and signs seen upon garments in a dream signify going on pilgrimage or travelling to one of the Arab lands. If a person sees himself wearing a thin garment beneath his garment, property that he will accumulate will come into his hands, and his inner state will be better than his outward state. If he wears this thin garment over his garment, it signifies his wickedness, his error in religion, and his openly committing sins and rebellion. The thickness of the garment is better than its thinness.

For a woman, wearing a thin and soft garment in a dream signifies honour and renown; a thick garment signifies hardship and toil. To see a garment woven with gold and silver signifies goodness in religion and worldly affairs and attaining desires and wishes. (If a person sees himself wearing a garment of great value, this dream signifies pure goodness for both the rich and the poor. Whoever sees that he does not wear a new garment after it has been washed will not attain the joy and gladness suited to his nature and desired by him. If, while awake, he is unable to repair the tears and rips in the garment he wears, it signifies that the owner of that garment will have a child. Whoever wears a torn garment will be visited by sorrow and grief.

To see one’s garment torn in a dream signifies that harm and grief will come to the dreamer’s religion, or that his life and enjoyment will be diminished. An ugly and badly patched garment signifies loss, damage and unemployment. Whoever sees wetness in his garment will be prevented from travelling and from completing the thing he intended.

The drying of a garment in a dream is an exception to this interpretation. If a person sees himself washing his own garment or another’s garment, it signifies warding off the hardship that will arise in that person’s livelihood and the disclosure of hidden matters and affairs.

Whoever sees himself stripped of all his garments in a dream will be removed from office. If a person sees that he has lost his garments, it signifies the destruction and loss of the things that adorn those people.

To see oneself wearing women’s clothing with the intention of resembling women signifies that sorrow and grief will befall the dreamer. Or, something will gain power over him. Whoever sees an unfamiliar garment renewing and turning green upon him, it signifies that his heart will turn toward the direction it desires.

To see a sky-blue garment in a dream signifies grief and sorrow. Whoever sees himself wearing a linen garment, it signifies a fine livelihood and lawful property. Removing a dirty garment signifies the departure of grief and sorrow. Burning dirty garments is interpreted likewise. Wearing a new garment signifies lawful property; wearing a dirty garment signifies consuming unlawful wealth. If a person sees himself wearing two garments that are torn and cut apart, it signifies his death.

Whoever sees himself wearing an old but clean garment in a dream will be greatly admired and loved by those around him and will attain the superior station he deserves. Whoever sees himself wearing a patched garment will receive money. As many patches as there are upon the garment, that many sums of money will come to him. But if the garment is stained, there will be unexpected gossip and troubles.

To wear a green garment in a dream signifies that the person wearing it will attain what he desires in a short time. Red and black garments signify that the dream will come to pass quickly. Their meanings vary according to the colours of the garments.

It provides early awareness; the person sees risks before they grow and can choose a more solid path.

Neglect, haste, untrustworthy people or uncontrolled behavior can increase the difficulty.
