Tayammum

To see in a dream that one performs tayammum for the ablution of prayer or with the purpose of taking a ritual bath signifies deliverance and attaining relief, being freed from sorrows and griefs in a short time, and attaining comfort and tranquillity in little time.

The dream of one who performs tayammum in a place where water cannot be found and completes it is interpreted like the dream of taking ablution with pure water and completing it fully.

If it is not possible to complete tayammum in a dream, its interpretation is likewise that of the dream of the one who sees that the ablution he took with water was not completed. To see that one performs tayammum although water is present signifies departing from the Sacred Law.

According to Ja‘far al-Sadiq, performing tayammum in a dream is interpreted as attaining one’s desire, provision, pilgrimage, relief, and joy. To see oneself performing tayammum in the manner commanded by the Sacred Law signifies attaining one’s desire; if one is ill, recovery; if one is poor, abundance in one’s provision, going on pilgrimage, and being freed if one is a captive; and if one is in distress, emerging into ease.

According to another narration: Tayammum in a dream signifies the departure of sorrow and anxiety. Tayammum signifies travel, and also a person who fears that he may be afflicted by an illness for which tayammum would be likely to be performed.

To see that one performs tayammum with sand or with mud that does not adhere to one’s hand signifies that the journey of the dreamer will be arduous or impossible, and that he will act by following the desire of his lower self. Tayammum signifies passing from wealth to poverty, from health and soundness to illness, and, for one who is ill, finding healing from his illness.

To perform tayammum in a dream while water is present signifies engaging in false works. Some interpreters have also said that tayammum signifies deliverance from imprisonment and illnesses.

Ibn Sirin: To perform ablution without water in a dream (tayammum) indicates that the resolution of one’s problems is drawing near. Tayammum is generally performed in place of the ordinary ablution when water cannot be found or because of an illness that prevents it. Nevertheless, the essence of the religious rite and act remains. Tayammum in a dream may also indicate travel or illness. If tayammum is performed with a dry surface that does not adhere to the skin, such as wood, stone, dry sand, or earth, it may indicate that one’s travel plans will not be possible, or that one will become miserly, or that one will pursue one’s evil desires. Performing tayammum while water is available indicates falsehood and hypocrisy in a dream.

It also indicates persistently continuing upon the paths of sin while hoping for forgiveness, preferring worldly benefits to the lasting benefits of the Hereafter, preferring masturbation to lawful sexual intercourse, or being a hypocritical person; and it may also indicate recovery from a terminal illness or release from prison.
