Waking Up

To wake from sleep in a dream signifies a new undertaking and a change in life.

To wake up and wakefulness in a dream are interpreted as activity, effort, worship, and prosperity. According to Abu Sa‘id al-Wa‘iz: To see oneself asleep and then awakened signifies entering upon and laboring at an undertaking of which one has no knowledge; to see oneself awakening a sleeping person signifies striving to bring him to the path of Truth; and to see someone awakening oneself indicates that he is endeavoring to bring one to the path of Truth.

‘Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi interprets the dream of awakening in five ways: acting wisely in one’s affairs, continuing in the affairs of religion and the world, refraining from that which the Sacred Law has forbidden, striving for an abundance of sustenance, and longevity.

Whoever sees in a dream that he has risen immediately from a deep sleep will exert himself in the affairs of religion and the world and will succeed in this. Whoever sees that he is awake while everyone else is asleep will benefit from the heedlessness of the people. Whoever sees that, although sleep has overcome him, he forces himself not to sleep will continue in his affairs and in securing his livelihood, despite being weary.

Whoever sees in a dream that he has remained awake for a long time will live long. To see oneself awake in a dream is a sign that, while awake, one is upon the right path. According to some interpreters, wakefulness is also interpreted as longevity.

To see oneself prodding a sleeping person and awakening him is evidence that one is calling that person to the right path.

According to another tradition: To see oneself awakened in a dream signifies his serious and sincere conduct and repentance, and his return from a journey undertaken for trade and gain.

It can be read as a sign of easing, receiving support, gaining morale, or a fruitful development.

Underestimating opportunities, succumbing to comfort, or being late may reduce the positive effect.

In the interpretation, the themes of work and responsibility, success and reputation, the emotional tone in the dream, and how the symbol concludes in the dream should be evaluated together.
