The angle between the progressing Sun and the progressing Moon creates the deepest, longest-lasting cycle of the advanced chart system — this is called the advanced lunation cycle and it divides your life into major phases of approximately 29 years from birth to death.
What is a Lunation Cycle?
At your birth, the angle between the progressing Sun and the progressing Moon is exactly the same as your natal Sun-Moon angle (because progression starts from “day zero”). Over time, the progressing Moon (moving ~13° per year) moves much faster than the progressing Sun (moving ~1° per year), so the angle between them gradually opens up — akin to a miniature, year-spanning version of the real Sun-Moon cycle in the sky (new moon → full moon → new moon, ~29.5 days). Thus, the advanced lunation cycle also lasts precisely ~29 years.
The Eight Phases of the Cycle
Similar to the actual Moon phases, the advanced lunation cycle can also be divided into eight main phases:
- Advanced New Moon (conjunction): The beginning of a new ~29-year cycle — a time for planting seeds and setting new directions.
- Advanced Crescent (~45°): First steps, facing early challenges.
- Advanced First Quarter (~90°): Crisis of action; pressure for concrete action.
- Advanced Gibbous (~135°): Fine-tuning, a time for correcting details.
- Advanced Full Moon (opposition, ~14-15th year): The peak of the cycle — seeing the fruits of what was sown in previous years, a climax of awareness.
- Advanced Disseminating Moon (~225°): Sharing, teaching, passing on what has been gained.
- Advanced Last Quarter (~270°): Review, crisis of letting go of the old.
- Advanced Balsamic Moon (~315°): Closure, preparation for the next cycle, introspection.
Why is the Phase at the Time of Birth Important?
The lunation phase you were in at the time of your birth (your natal Sun-Moon angle) symbolically colors your overall “approach to life” — for example, someone born during the “Advanced Full Moon” phase (near a natal Sun-Moon opposition/full moon) may carry a more “peak-focused”, result-seeking attitude throughout life. This is the long-term imprint of being born under a full moon on one’s personality.
Age 29: Why Does it Coincide with the Saturn Return?
An interesting coincidence (or not a coincidence in the eyes of astrologers): the completion duration of the advanced lunation cycle (~29 years) is almost identical to the duration of the Saturn Return (~29 years). Therefore, around age ~29, it is considered one of the most intense transitional periods in astrology, marking both the “closure and restarting of the inner cycle” and the “test of external responsibilities”.
