When you take your Solar Return chart in hand, you are faced with another chart that is as complex as your natal chart but only valid for one year. If you do not ask the right questions in order, you will get lost in this abundance. This article explains the six questions that an astrologer asks themselves in sequence when interpreting the Solar Return — and how to seek the answer to each question.
First: What Is Solar Return, What Is It Not?
The Solar Return chart is calculated at the moment the Sun returns to the exact degree and minute of your birth (within a few hours of your birthday). It is read like a natal chart but is temporary — valid only until your next birthday. A critical technical detail: the calculation is made according to the location you are at that moment, not your birth time — if you are in a different city or country on your birthday, the chart must be recalculated for that location. Additionally, never read the Solar Return in isolation: the real depth comes from cross-referencing this temporary chart with your natal chart.
Question 1: What Energy Will I Approach This Year With?
The answer lies in the Solar Return Ascendant. The Ascendant determines the “personality tone” of the year — for example, if your Ascendant is Aries, you will approach the year with increasing energy, entrepreneurship, and a bit of impatience. The status of the ruling planet of the Ascendant in terms of sign/house/aspect further clarifies this tone; you read the general character and focus from this planet.
Question 2: What Is the Main Task of the Year?
The answer is found in the house of the Solar Return Sun. The Sun is always in the natal sign in the Solar Return (this does not change), but the house it falls into indicates the area where you will “shine a light”, invest your ego, and feel proud throughout the year — this is the main stage where you will find revitalization opportunities. The aspects received by the Sun determine how easy or difficult this theme will progress.
Question 3: Where Will My Heart Be This Year?
The answer comes from the Solar Return Moon. The sign, house, and aspects of the Moon reveal the emotional climate and inner needs. For example, if the Moon is in Libra in the 5th house, you will focus emotionally on love and relationships that year — your need for personal expression will intensify, and you may not feel “in control” in this area because your heart is tied there. The harsh aspects received by the Moon (e.g., square to Pluto) indicate deep and transformative changes rather than superficial ones in that area.
Question 4: Which Natal Theme Will Rekindle This Year?
Here, two different techniques come into play:
- Are natal planets coming to SR aspects? If a planet in your natal chart conjoins with one of the angles of the Solar Return, like the Ascendant/MC, the theme of that natal planet is especially emphasized throughout the year. Example: If you have a natal Sun-Mars square and the natal Sun is conjunct the SR Ascendant, this Sun-Mars tension prominently manifests on both personal (Ascendant) and public (MC) levels.
- Which natal house is “conjoining” with the SR Ascendant? The degree of the SR Ascendant falls into which natal house, that natal house is activated for that year. Example: If the SR Ascendant is at 14° Cancer and this degree falls within your natal 5th house, the 5th house (creativity, love, children) becomes a second area of focus for that year.
Together, these two techniques provide the most reliable answer to the question, “which natal story is back on stage this year”.
Question 5: When Will the Year’s Turning Points Occur?
Timing is a three-step process: first, the progressed Solar Return Moon is examined — using the “one degree a day” method, the dates during the year when the Moon will make exact aspects are calculated (the six weeks before and after each date are also influential); then these dates are cross-checked with transits. Additionally, planets in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th houses) indicate significant events/turning points, and conjunctions and harsh aspects signal the challenges and opportunities of the year. A particularly important technical detail to pay attention to: critical degrees — 0° or 29° of any sign. If a planet in the Solar Return is at one of these degrees, an important event related to the theme of that planet and the house it resides in is particularly likely to occur that year.
Question 6: How Do I Monitor a Specific Topic (Marriage, Finance, Health)?
- Finance: Look at the SR 2nd and 8th houses, and the status of Venus. For example, if SR Venus is in opposition to SR Neptune and Venus also rules the 2nd house, it is considered that there will be less emphasis on material matters that year or that income may fluctuate. If the 8th house is positive, it indicates matters like inheritance, shares, unexpected gains; if negative, it signals financial losses.
- Marriage/Partnership: Activation of the 3rd, 7th, 9th, or 11th houses (conjunction with the Ascendant or the Sun/Ascendant ruler being in one of these houses) is seen as a marriage indicator. It is expected that at least three or four of the eight possible indicators are present together — a single sign is not considered sufficient.
- Health: Caution is warranted if the SR 8th house falls or the Ascendant falls into the natal 6th house, or if the rulers of the 1st and 8th houses make harsh aspects — if this configuration is present, it is advisable to review doctor/treatment choices.
- Separation/Divorce: If the SR Ascendant makes a square or quincunx aspect to the natal Ascendant, this is generally seen along with health issues or personal changes; negative aspects between the 6th and 8th houses are also a pattern often observed during these years.
Example Reading: A Year of Travel
In the Solar Return chart of the theosophist H.P. Blavatsky for 1878, the Ascendant was in the 1st house and conjoined with its ruler Jupiter; both were the rulers of the natal 7th house, while Neptune was in the 10th house as the second ruler of the 7th house. This structure coincided with a long journey that occurred that year (immigration from America to India) — the relationship of the Ascendant with the natal 9th house (long-distance travel, philosophy) aligned perfectly with the principle that the planets in the 9th house indicated whether this journey would occur. This is a concrete example of how the above question “which natal house is conjoining with the SR Ascendant” (Question 4) works in practice.
Points to Consider
Reading the Solar Return as an isolated chart can be misleading — the actual information comes from the dialogue this temporary chart has with your natal chart. It’s also beneficial to look at hemisphere emphasis (upper/lower, east/west concentration) and the predominant quality of that year (cardinal/fixed/mutable) for the overall “feeling” of the chart — a single planet placement never gives the whole picture. Finally: the Solar Return is only valid for approximately a year; although some astrologers refer to longer effects, there is no consensus on this matter — the chart is completely renewed at your next birthday.
