Karmic Astrology is an approach that tries to reveal the recurring themes and areas of learning that the soul carries by relating the signs, planets, and house placements in the birth chart to past lives. It interprets not the entire chart but a specific perspective; its aim is to liberate the individual.
What Does Karmic Astrology Tell Us?
- Symbolic traces of the past: Signs, planets, and houses are read as symbolic representations of past lives; they create a bridge between the past, present, and future.
- “Karma” = action: Karma is not just punishment — the root of the word means “action.” Karmic reading investigates the action-reaction relationship and what needs to be learned in that life.
- The wound and healing: Points like Chiron indicate emotional wounds and the healing potential that can arise from those wounds; wounds are also the teaching aspect of karmic debt.
- Indicators used: Natal placements, retrograde planets, North/South Lunar Nodes, progressed chart, pre-birth eclipses, and Lilith — none are sufficient on their own; multiple indicators are evaluated together.
How to Read Karmic Themes in Your Chart?
- Lunar Nodes axis: North Lunar Node indicates the spiritual purpose moving forward, while the South Node shows habits that need to be let go — it is the most direct indicator of karmic astrology.
- Chiron position: The sign and house placement shows in which area a deep wound and the accompanying healing/teaching potential is carried; see Chiron: The Wounded Healer.
- Black Moon Lilith: Indicates suppressed, taboo, or rejected instinctual themes; in karmic reading, it is generally assessed as “unconfronted power” — see Black Moon Lilith.
- Retrograde planets: Retrograde planets in the natal chart are read as an inward theme that needs to be reprocessed in the area represented by that planet.
- Karmic relationships: Retrograde Venus in synastry and specific house overlaps can indicate past life connections; however, a single aspect is never sufficient evidence; a holistic synastry reading is required.
Considerations
It is incorrect to interpret the concept of karma solely as “punishment” — the root meaning is “action” and the interpretation must take this into account. Drawing a karmic conclusion based on a single aspect or indicator can be misleading; multiple indicators (nodes, Chiron, Lilith, retrogrades) are expected to point in the same direction for a strong theme. There is no definitive, universal definition of a “karmic house” or a complete interpretive template in the sources — claims that offer a definitive list in this matter should be approached cautiously.
For the most concrete indicator of karmic astrology, you can refer to our articles on North Lunar Node and for the wound/healing theme, see Chiron.
