“Mercury is in retrograde, so everything is going wrong” — you have probably heard this sentence dozens of times. Mercury retrograde is the most well-known, feared, and also most misunderstood concept in astrology. So what is really happening in the sky, and how accurate is it to describe it as a “disaster”?

What is Retrograde Really?

Mercury doesn’t actually move backward — this is an optical illusion. As Earth and Mercury orbit the Sun at different speeds, when Earth comes into a position that “passes” Mercury, it appears to us in the sky that Mercury is moving backward (just like when passing a car on the side road, it seems as if that car is sliding backwards). In astrology, this visual slowing / retrograde appearance is interpreted as the planet’s energy being more introspective, subjective, and partially “blocked” in expression.

Why is There So Much Talk About It?

Mercury goes retrograde on average 3-4 times a year — making it a much more frequently occurring event compared to other planets. For comparison: Venus goes retrograde approximately every 8 years, while Mars does so about every 2 years. Mercury going retrograde in the same sign is a cycle that repeats approximately every 6 years — meaning that the theme of “this retrograde period” indeed resurfaces at certain intervals.

What Really Happens During a Retrograde Period?

Mercury is the planet of communication, mind, technology, and daily interactions. When it is retrograde, outward expression may appear weak / blocked — but conversely, an opportunity for inner deepening, reevaluation, and examination arises. The themes traditionally attributed to this period include:

  • Withdrawal in communication, misunderstandings: The clarity of messages may diminish, old issues may resurface.
  • Re-thinking, reevaluation: Anything starting with “re-” (re-view, re-vise, re-connect) is a natural theme of this period.
  • Technology/travel disruptions: The most commonly told practical effect in popular culture (but not given as a strict technical rule in astrological sources).

The “Retrograde = Disaster” Myth

There is a clear warning highlighted in sources: the misconception that retrograde is automatically “bad” is false. In addition to the weakening / blocking of energy, it also offers the opportunity for introspection, resilience, and deepening. The retrograde period may not be ideal for starting something new — but it can be quite productive for reevaluating something that already exists (a relationship, a project, an idea).

What are Shadow Periods?

There are “shadow periods” experienced before and after the retrograde period — during these periods, Mercury is not yet retrograde (or has just finished retrograding), but its position in the sky “pre-visits” or “post-visits” the degrees it will pass during the retrograde. Therefore, retrograde themes may start to be slightly felt a few weeks before the official start/end dates and can continue for some time after the end.

Why Does the Sign Matter?

The sign in which Mercury is retrograde determines the “color” of that period. For example, when retrograde in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), the theme may lean more towards emotional / deep / secretive topics; whereas in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), more emphasis will be placed on themes of communication and social relationships. If you have a strong emphasis on that sign in your natal chart (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or directly Mercury), you are more likely to feel the themes of that period more distinctly.

Upcoming Mercury Retrograde in 2026

The retrograde period in Cancer during summer 2026 (June 29 – July 23) has passed. Next up: Mercury will be retrograde in Scorpio from October 24 – November 13, 2026. Scorpio is the sign of deep, secretive, transformative themes — during this period, common resources (debt, inheritance, shared finances), hidden issues, and intense emotional conversations are expected to resurface. Considering the shadow period, its effects may be slightly felt from early October to early December.

Where is Mercury in Your Birth Chart?

The most personal way to understand how much and how retrograde periods will affect you is to know in which sign and house your natal Mercury is located — especially if your natal Mercury is already retrograde, these periods tend to feel more familiar and less destructive to you. Calculate your free birth chart and discover where your Mercury is positioned.

In Summary

  • Mercury retrograde is not a real backward movement but an optical illusion from Earth’s perspective.
  • It occurs on average 3-4 times a year; a repeat in the same sign happens approximately every 6 years.
  • Theme: along with the weakening / blocking of expression, it offers opportunities for inner deepening and reevaluation.
  • The “automatic disaster” misconception is false — shadow periods before/after official dates also carry effects.
  • Upcoming retro: October 24 – November 13, 2026, in Scorpio — deep, secretive, transformative themes may come to the forefront.
