The opposition aspect (180°) occurs when two planets are directly across from each other in the zodiac: it symbolizes the tension, polarization between two different energies, and choices that often give a sense of “either one or the other.”

What Does Opposition Aspect Mean?

  • Polarization and tension: Two energies clash or one dominates while the other stays in the background.
  • Projection: A person typically identifies with one extreme and rejects the other; the rejected side often appears in the external world as a person or event (externalization).
  • Inner duality vs. relational drama: Some combinations, like the Sun-Moon opposition, are more internal (two sides of the self), while most oppositions take the form of conflict expressed in relationships.
  • Transformable tension: With conscious effort, the two poles can be reconciled; the solution often involves holding both perspectives together.

How to Read the Opposition Aspect in Your Chart?

  • Which axis: The common theme and opposing approach of the opposing signs (e.g., Gemini-Sagittarius) is the key to interpretation.
  • Which pole is stronger: If one side has a conjunction or multiple planets, that side tends to be more dominant in life; the other side may become the “suffering” or repressed side over time.
  • Position relative to the horizon: If one side is above the ascendant (public) and the other is below (private), the lower pole requires “giving,” while the upper pole is related to what others reflect onto you; hence, oppositions are often resolved through another person.
  • Sun-Moon opposition is a special case: It indicates that the birth occurred close to the Full Moon; the conflict is between two internal sides. Other planets opposing the Sun are often retrograde (moving backward) — this is a different technical detail from the Sun-Moon opposition.

Things to Keep in Mind

The opposition aspect is not solely “bad”: when the poles are reconciled, it provides a balanced perspective and transformational capacity — but this requires conscious effort. A frequently overlooked point is that oppositions can also have a significant effect on health; when the dominant and repressed poles swap places, physical symptoms may arise.
