Solar Return Ascendant: Meaning in 12 Signs

The most “colorful” element of the Solar Return chart is the Ascendant — it shows how you will present yourself to the world throughout the year and what kind of energy you will encounter. In this article, we discuss the implications of the Solar Return Ascendant in each of the 12 signs.

How is SR Ascendant Different from Natal Ascendant?

The Ascendant in your birth chart is permanent and never changes; the SR Ascendant, on the other hand, varies each year because the moment of the Solar Return occurs at a different hour of the year. The SR Ascendant can be thought of as a “temporary” identity/attitude layer for that specific year — it dresses your natal Ascendant in a year-specific temporary “costume”.

SR Ascendant in the 12 Signs

• Aries: Increased energy, assertiveness, perhaps impatience; you meet the year swiftly and boldly.
• Taurus: A slow, steady pace; security and material comfort are priorities.
• Gemini: A curious, dynamic year; communication and versatility are prominent.
• Cancer: An emotional, home/family-focused year; a protective attitude.
• Leo: A year of visibility and self-expression; a dramatic, confident demeanor.
• Virgo: Focused on organization, health, and efficiency; a detail-oriented approach.
• Libra: Relationships and aesthetics take center stage; a conciliatory, diplomatic attitude.
• Scorpio: An intense, transformative year; a search for depth, with a mysterious aura.
• Sagittarius: An optimistic, travel/learning-oriented year; a desire to broaden horizons.
• Capricorn: A serious, goal-oriented year; responsibility and discipline are highlighted.
• Aquarius: An independent, innovative year; a socially/group-focused attitude.
• Pisces: An intuitive, dreamy year; boundaries may blur.

Why is the Ruler of the Ascendant Important?

The sign, house, and aspects of the planet ruling the SR Ascendant in the SR chart provide more detailed information about the year’s overall character and focus than the Ascendant sign itself. For example, if your SR Ascendant is in Leo (ruled by the Sun), looking at which house the Sun is in the SR chart clarifies exactly which area of life (career, relationships, creativity) the theme of “visibility” will be experienced.
