Every year, around your birthday, the Sun returns to the exact degree it was at your birth in the sky. Astrology refers to this moment as Solar Return, and the chart drawn for this moment is read like an “annual snapshot” of the upcoming year.
How is the Solar Return Calculated?
The Solar Return chart is drawn at the moment the Sun returns to the exact degree and minute of your birth (this can occur 1-2 days before/after your birthday) — it is read like a birth chart but is only valid until the next birthday. Two things directly affect the calculation: accurate birth time (the SR Ascendant is very sensitive to this) and your place of residence on your birthday (if you move during the year, the SR must be recalculated).
Why Does Solar Return Yield a Different Ascendant Each Year?
Since the moment of return occurs at a different hour of the day each year, your SR Ascendant is almost always different from your Ascendant in your birth chart. Exception: If your SR Ascendant is very close to the Ascendant in your birth chart, it is usually interpreted as a very significant year.
The Four Main Components of Solar Return
- SR Ascendant — the tone of your general approach to your surroundings throughout the year.
- SR Sun’s house — the main focus/mission of the year.
- SR Moon: The sign, house, and aspects depicting the emotional climate and inner needs of that year.
- Angular planets: Planets that fall on the SR Ascendant, MC, Descendant or IC bring strong, significant events that year.
Comparison with the Natal Chart: The Most Critical Step
Reading a Solar Return chart in isolation is incomplete. The real power comes from looking at which planets and points in your birth chart connect with the aspects of that year’s SR chart (Ascendant, MC, Descendant, IC). For example, if your SR Ascendant is 22° Virgo and your natal Venus is 24° Virgo, it means your natal Venus is conjuncting that year’s SR Ascendant — themes related to your natal Venus (relationships, aesthetics, values) will stand out significantly that year.
Aimed Solar Return
Since the chart is calculated based on your place of residence, some astrologers suggest intentionally traveling to another city around your birthday to create a more “favorable” SR chart for the year — this is called Aimed Solar Return. This can be thought of as the annual version of astrocartography logic.
Reading the Solar Return alongside transits and progressed chart presents a complete timing picture that answers all three questions: “this year”, “this period”, and “this life phase”.
