A transit is the current actual position of a planet in the sky — when placed around your birth chart, it falls into a natal house and makes aspects to your natal planets. Transits are external/environmental pressures that trigger the potential of the natal chart; they do not “give” you a new trait, but activate something that is already present in your chart.
The Golden Rule of Transit Interpretation
The meaning of a transit can never be read in isolation — it always depends on which natal planet, which natal sign, and which natal house it touches. The same transit can be experienced very differently in different birth charts: someone with many hard aspects in their natal chart will feel each transit more intensely; someone with a “calm” natal chart may hardly notice the same transit.
Transit Effects by Aspect Type
- Conjunction: The theme of the natal planet intensifies, a new cycle begins.
- Square/Opposition: Tension, crisis moment, pressure to take action.
- Trine/Sextile: Ease and opportunity window — if not used, it quietly passes.
When approaching an aspect, the energy is not yet ripe; when the aspect is exact, its effect peaks; when separating, the energy dissolves and meaning clarifies.
Transit Durations by Planet Speed
Fast planets shape daily/weekly moods, while slow planets shape life periods that last years — you can check our separate articles for each planet’s transit duration and meaning in the 12 houses:
- Transit Moon — hours/days
- Transit Mercury — 2-3 weeks
- Transit Venus — 3-4 weeks
- Transit Sun — ~30 days
- Transit Mars — 6-7 weeks
- Transit Jupiter — ~1 year
- Transit Saturn — ~2.5 years
- Transit Uranus — ~7 years
- Transit Neptune — ~14 years
- Transit Pluto — 12-31 years
Retrograde Transits: Same Aspect Three Times
When a planet goes retrograde, it may repeat its aspect to a natal planet three times: during the first pass, during the retrograde, and again after moving direct. This means that the theme is processed not just once, but multiple times throughout the period.
Combining Transits with Other Techniques
Transits show the “now”; progressed chart shows inner development, while Solar Return shows the annual overall framework — when used together, they provide the most reliable timing picture.
