The quincunx (inconjunct, 150°) is an aspect formed between two planets that generally signifies disharmony, a constant need for adjustment, or a fated confrontation — some astrologers also refer to it as “compulsory compromise.”

What Does Quincunx Mean?

  • Disharmony and ignorance: The planets in the aspect do not “recognize” each other; there is no common ground between their natures, leading to a strange or uncomfortable tension.
  • Two interpretative traditions: Some astrologers read the quincunx as an inevitable challenge that must be faced; others interpret it as a process requiring constant adaptation and compromise — thinking of both together provides a more holistic reading.
  • Matching with semi-sextile: The quincunx matches with the semi-sextile (30°) to complete the 180° half-circle; both aspects carry a similar theme of “side vision, incomplete understanding.”
  • Focusing function: A waxing quincunx brings a clarification process focused on the self, while a waning quincunx brings a clarification process focused on others and external relationships.

How to Interpret Quincunx in Your Chart?

  • Orb: Traditionally about ~3°, but nowadays most astrologers accept up to 5° — however, this wide orb risks confusing the quincunx with the biquintile (144°), so careful measurement is required.
  • House relationship: Quincunxes generally form between placements six houses apart (e.g., 2nd-7th or 4th-9th houses); the conflicting desires represented by these houses are central to the interpretation (e.g., tension between the desire to possess and the desire for relationship).
  • Constant adjustment: The disharmony between the planets’ natures and the desires of the houses is interpreted as a recurring compromise, withdrawal, or a search for a balance that “never quite fits” in life.
  • Confrontation or rupture: When faced, the quincunx clarifies the relationship; when avoided, it can manifest as a theme of break or continuously neglected service/health.

Things to Consider

There is disagreement among astrologers regarding the full karmic nature of the quincunx and “how to resolve it”; there is no definitive prescription. Given that wide orb usage can lead to confusion with the biquintile, prioritizing narrow orb (near 3°) quincunxes is recommended.
