Ghusl, Performing Ghusl

According to Ibn Sirin: To see oneself performing ghusl in the sea or in a river in a dream indicates that the dreamer fears Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and according to one interpretation, that he will be delivered from grief, sorrow, and distress.

Whoever sees in a dream that he is performing ghusl with clean and pure water, if he is in distress, shall be delivered from it. If the dreamer is in debt, he shall be freed from his debt; if he is ill, he shall recover. He shall attain safety, and his affairs in the Hereafter shall be set right.

Performing ghusl in muddy or unclean water in a dream signifies grief and sorrow, illness, distress, and debt, although good may ultimately be hoped for. To see oneself in a state of major ritual impurity and performing ghusl with something by which ghusl is permissible indicates that one’s affairs will become easy and that one will be delivered from grief and sorrow.

To see oneself performing ghusl with something by which ghusl is not permissible is interpreted to the contrary. To see oneself in a state of major ritual impurity and unable to find water with which to perform ghusl indicates difficulty in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever sees that he performs ghusl for Friday or the festivals shall, together with the matters mentioned above, attain a high rank in the Hereafter. To see oneself washing and putting on one’s clothes indicates deliverance from grief and sorrow, and safety from every kind of calamity, accident, and illness. If the garment is new, this interpretation is even stronger.

To see oneself washing someone and causing him to perform the ablution of ghusl is evidence that one bears goodwill toward him and speaks of it to everyone. To see oneself being washed by another person indicates that he thinks well of oneself. To see something being washed which it is not permissible to wash indicates that one considers something crooked in reality to be right.

According to Jabir al-Maghribi: Ghusl is considered a sign of purity in religion and of an increase in honor, esteem, and fame. According to Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi: To see oneself freed from major ritual impurity with pure water, or performing ghusl for Friday, indicates repentance from sins and fulfilling what is obligatory concerning kindness toward one’s parents and relatives.

Whoever sees in a dream that he performs ghusl with cold water during the winter shall be afflicted with grief, sorrow, and illness. Performing ghusl with cold water on a summer day is the opposite of this. To see oneself performing ghusl with hot water in winter indicates gain and benefit in every respect, and, if one is ill, recovery.

Performing ghusl with hot water in summer is interpreted to the contrary. To see oneself performing ghusl for a festival indicates relief and joy; if one is unmarried, one shall marry; and if one is poor, one shall acquire wealth. To see oneself performing ghusl in order to enter the state of ihram or to enter Mecca indicates joy, finding something one has lost, and strength in religion. Performing ghusl in order to stone the Devil during the season of the pilgrimage indicates a desire for risk or a desire to work in the service of the state.

To see oneself wearing new clothes after ghusl in a dream indicates that, if one is ill, one shall recover; if one is in debt, one shall pay one’s debt; if one is imprisoned, one shall be released; if one has not performed the pilgrimage, one shall go on pilgrimage; if one is poor, one shall become wealthy; if one is a merchant or tradesman, one’s trade and profits shall increase; and if one is unemployed, one shall find work.

Whoever sees in a dream that he performs ghusl but does not put on clothes shall be delivered from apprehension and grief. He shall attain health. Whoever sees that, after ghusl, he puts on torn clothes shall be delivered from grief, but shall fall into poverty. (Naked)

To see in a dream that the ablution of ghusl has been completed indicates that one’s desires shall be completely fulfilled. Being unable to complete the ablution of ghusl indicates that one’s desires shall not be fulfilled. Whoever sees that he enters a pool, bath, or similar body of water for ghusl shall marry if he is unmarried. Whoever performs ablution from a vessel shall recover property that was stolen from him.

According to Ibn Kathir: To see an unknown woman performing ghusl indicates that rain shall fall; washing one’s hands with clay indicates that the enmity between oneself and another person shall end and that one shall attain something one has been expecting from someone; and, if one is a sinner, it indicates repentance.

To see oneself washing and performing ghusl with something such as clay or soap indicates that one’s sorrow shall come to an end; washing clothes indicates strength in religion, the repayment of debt, and the disclosure of hidden matters. To wash a corpse in a dream indicates that one shall pay his debt. To see the deceased washing himself indicates that his children and grandchildren shall be delivered from sorrow and attain goodness and blessing, that his property shall increase, and that he shall have a child.

To see another man washing the deceased and causing him to perform ablution indicates that one’s sins shall be forgiven through his intercession. To see oneself calling someone to wash the garment of the deceased indicates that the deceased is in need of prayer, charity, the repayment of his debt, and the fulfillment of his testament; in short, it indicates that all the matters for which he was responsible shall be fulfilled. (Washing the Dead)

According to another narration: To perform ghusl in a dream because of major ritual impurity or for the Friday prayer indicates repentance from sins and fulfilling the kindness required toward one’s parents or friends. If one performs ghusl on a winter day with cold water, this dream sometimes indicates sorrow, grief, distress, and illnesses. If one performs ghusl on a winter day with hot water, it indicates attaining various benefits, profit, trade, and recovery from illness.

Whoever sees that he performs ghusl for a festival shall marry if he is unmarried. If he performs ghusl because of an eclipse of the moon or sun, the dreamer may sometimes fall into a frightful matter, or distress and hardship may befall him from a person signified by the sun or the moon. The interpretation of performing ghusl for the prayer for rain is likewise.

To perform ghusl in order to wash the deceased indicates separation from an heedless and ignorant person. If one performs ghusl in order to enter Mecca or assume ihram, it indicates relief, joy, meeting with absent persons, and the payment of debts. The interpretation of performing ghusl in order to stone the Devil and perform the circumambulation is likewise. Sometimes performing ghusl in order to stone the Devil indicates victory over an enemy.

Performing ghusl in order to perform the circumambulation indicates striving to secure one’s livelihood, serving eminent men, having sexual intercourse with one’s wife, or visiting one’s parents.

Whoever sees that he performs ghusl and puts on new clothes in a dream, if he is ill, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) shall grant him healing; if he is in debt, he shall pay his debt; if he is imprisoned, he shall be freed from imprisonment. If he is sorrowful, he shall be delivered from sorrow and grief; and if he has not performed the pilgrimage, he shall go on pilgrimage. If the dreamer is poor, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) shall make him wealthy. If he is a merchant or tradesman whose trade and profession have encountered various difficulties and whose buying and selling have come to a standstill, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) shall ease his trade and profession, restore his wealth to him, and remove his sorrow and grief. If that person has been dismissed from office, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) shall restore his position to him.

Whoever sees that he performs ghusl but does not put on new clothes shall have his sorrow and grief removed, and his body shall be healthy. Whoever sees that he performs ghusl and puts on old clothes shall have his sorrow and grief removed, but shall become poor. Whoever sees that his ghusl has been completed shall have his affair completed as well. Whoever sees that he cannot complete his ghusl shall not complete the affair he desires.

Whoever sees that he enters a pool, a small well, or something similar in order to perform ghusl shall marry if he is unmarried. Whoever performs ghusl or ablution in a tunnel shall find the thing that was stolen from him. If a person sees that he performs ghusl with excessively hot water, he shall fall into sorrow and grief in proportion to the heat of that water. Some interpreters said: Performing ghusl in a dream indicates marriage. Seeing an unknown woman performing ghusl indicates the falling of rain.
